So I've been on the forum a while and I've noticed people talking about when a PC boots or posts, the internal PC speaker on the motherboard should beep, I was looking on my motherboard (see sig) and I found the plug for the speaker but there is nothing to plug into it, so I never get any beeps when I boot. What/which wire is supposed to be plugged in

Question 2

I got some new PC parts for Christmas and have been trying to plug in an internal card read, however unlike the standard USB wires (8 pin) this is only a 4 pin, I've tried plugging it in every which way possible to the USB pins on plugs on the motherboard but I just cant get it to work (it's definitely not broken)

Please post pics if you have them, it will help

What make and model is the card reader??? All I need to know about that one for now. 4 pin usually is not the standard.

Second, most cases don't come with a speaker/beep wire unless its for the headphone/mic jacks on the front of the case.

Most motherboards have the speaker on board, if not you can get a little speaker that plugs into it. ALSO, some motherboards don't have the speaker. Usually its a 4 pin slot.

this is from your motherboard manual, I've marked 4 pins which should work. You will need to turn the plug 180 degrees if it fails to work at first

Thanks for the help Bedazzled, out of those 3 does it matter which one I plug the header into? only I think out of the ones circled 1 or 2 may be taken up by other stuff

It will have a 4Pin header but only 3Pins, it gets plugged into the bottom row :)

I think it'll have 4 connected pins and it'll work in either row as long as it's the right way around.

It'll be correctly oriented with the red wire on pin 1 or 2 and the black wire on pin 7 or 8.

PC Speaker / Motherboard Speaker can be bought for a couple quid. Flea-bay is your best bet. You can get ones that are on short wires, so just plug it onto the two pins and away you go. If you dont get a beep, then +/- are round the wrong way. Try flipping it over onto the opposite pins. Im not sure why mobo manufacturers dont implement them onto the motherboard or include a plug in inside the box. Equally, I dont really know why some case manuafacturers dont include them in the case. It can be an essential part to diagnose any problems with your setup when the PC is in POST.

Far right 4 pin (Black, Green, White, Red) plugged in, tried it on the top and bottle set of pins, still doesn't work

First have you tried inserting a memory card?

There's probably nothing for the USB to pick up until you do.

If that doesn't work then try the other header on the left if you know that one definately works.

I assume you've installed the Intel chipset drivers?
