Internet - Connected?

Hello all,

My friend has just brought his laptop to me with a problem, he can't get on any website on IE or FF, it just gives the usual; please connect to the internet sort of thing.
But..
He can sign into MSN and talk to people.

I have no idea what's wrong with it.

I was thinking maybe a virus?

I use Avira and Spybot but both of these need the internet to install / Even when i put them over from USB.

It's a Vista Laptop and i don't know my way around vista.
Any ideas?

Check firewalls and software such as Norton as it looks as though only the ports required for browsing web pages are blocked.

Proxy settings - Start/Control Panel/Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings - Make sure nothing's ticked. That bebo/facebook proxy virus is doing the run around again, this laptop has the classic symptoms.

Check Firewall all seems ok.

Check proxy setting's and nothing's ticked.
