Internet connection a slow starter

I just reinstalled windows xp and finished installing all the drivers but now when I boot up it takes a while for my internet connection to get going. When I boot it sits there 'acquiring network address' which takes about 20 secs but it used to work straight away before the reinstall. I am using a newer package of nforce4 drivers and I connect directly to the internet using a router so it may be something to do with the ethernet driver. If anyone could help me sort this out I'd really appreciate it.

Firstly what is causing the delay ?
One of 2 things
1: Taking time to negotiate port speeds with the router/switch
2: Taking time to get a DHCP address

You could try hard setting the speed/duplex in your nic driver.
Most internet gateways will work at 100 full

Use a fixed IP instead of DHCP.

Thanks for the reply PCZ.

I can't use a fixed IP because I can't get regular broadband in my area so my ISP acts like a wireless LAN and needs to use DHCP.

The speed/duplex is currently set for 'Auto Negotiation' - should I set it to '100MB Full Duplex'?

On my old install it used to be working as soon as XP booted. I've noticed that now, after taking time to acquire the network address, it displays 'limited or no connectivity' for a few seconds before springing into life.

Sorry to drag up an old topic but I'm still having trouble with this. When I boot it hangs at the windows startup screen and I'm pretty sure its the net connection taking its time to acquire a network address as I have to set my connection to dhcp. If anyone could offer some advice on how to get it speeded up I'd appreciate it.

Also, what should I set my speed/duplex to?

Set it to the fastest the two ends can do. If that's 100Mbps full duplex, go for that.

If you're connected to a router, what you set your machine to use won't make much odds to your internet connection..
