Mate A's got Bulldog Broadban and a usb modem set up on his pc. A housemate has agreed to chip in for the connection if he can get wireless action on his laptop.

Mate B had a spare linksys wireless router WA?????

Plugging the cable from the modem into the wireless router lets both PC and laptop have access to the router setup page but neither can access the internet.

Both can successfully ping the wan address given by the router but looking in \my computer\network settings the internet connection icon says it is disabled and can't be repaired or enabled.

Any thoughts?

What internet connection icon?
What does the router say for the connection status?

You have put in the username etc?

Router says it's connected, username & password have been entered.

In the view network connections section of xp there's an internet connection icon that shows as being disabled

That sounds like your network card. Got screenshot?
Output from start, run, cmd, ipconfig /all would be useful too.
