Internet connection lost - bt socket?

Looks like the main socket connector or wiring has gone on it. How do I repair this?

If I plug directly into the main socket it works ok, but when I place the outside panel on it doesnt.

Do I need to get a professional in or can I just buy a front panel and do it myself? If so are there any that are recommended that would provide a better connection?

BT NTE5 Master socket
is what i think you are after,google it as a lot of links may be to competitors i can`t link
Should be a case of just plugging in a new faceplate if the test socket is working

Only BT can (legally) work on your master socket, as in the bit that actually attaches to the wall. You can pretty much do whatever you want with the faceplate.

This seems like a pretty good resource after a quick googley search for this, which you should try to buy if you're replacing the faceplate as it does pretty much the same job as an i-plate and eliminates the need for microfilters.

Yeah its only the face plate that I need replacing. I wouldnt take off the actual thing from the wall.

It's the wiring up to and including the test socket you can't touch. Everything after that is all yours.

Well it has to be something to do with the wiring as I will need to replace the front panel which involves taking out the wires on it. Is that ok?

You only need one of those if you have the ring wire attached.Google bt ring wire for explanation

Those wires are your own responsibility, work away.

Thanks. My brother is an electrician and coming up to visit at the end of the month. Might just get him to do it.
