Hey,

I've just started to use my new pc, so i thought i may plug my ethernet cable in. So i did and it connect ok etc, then when i tryed the intenet i get nothing... So i went to "Network Connections" and clicked on the LAN Connection and click the tab "Support". I checked that everything was there, and it was. I clicked on "Repair" and got a message saying:-

"The following steps of the repair operation failed: Purgining the DNS Resolver cache. Please contact your network administrator or ISP".

I then tryed the ethernet cable in my laptop and it was fine!

Any Idea's on my new pc won't let me access the net?

Thanks Matt

SORRY I POSTED THIS IN WRONG SECTION OF THE FORUM.

POP and SMTP servers wont help if you cant even access the internet.

Most routers and cable modems are configured as DHCP by default, so everything is automatic, if thats the case, you could just goto the properties of the network card, and goto the TCP/IP settings and set IP address and DNS servers to automatic.

If however the cable modem is assuming you are manually configuring the PC (and perhaps the laptop is already configured right), then you should will need to add an IP address for the computer, a subnet mask (commonly 255.255.255.0), and a default gateway.. You'll also need to add the DNS server IP addresses.

As you said the lappy works, have a look to see how what its TCP/IP settings are, and copy them exactly. If that works you'll be able to have one of the computers connected but not both (due to IP conflict). However if it works, you can then try adding 1 to the PC's IP address, and see if it still works. If it does you'll be able to connect both lappy, and PC to the modem (hub or switch required), and use both.

All depends really on how the modems configured.

Once 'basic' internet configuration is done, you will need to add POP and SMTP servers if you use standard email (in otherwords not webmail)

Good luck.

BTW, are you running XP, or Vista?, might be able to find you some screenshots' if you are running XP and still having problems. Its a good sign that you see the 'connected' when you plug in the cable, at least that shows the network card is working, just misconfigured.

My router is configured with DHCP disabled, so as you can see I have to manually fill in my networking settings.

If your working laptop is configured manually it will have something like the following image (I have erased my DNS server addresses as you need DNS addresses provided by your service provider).

IP%20Properties.JPG

If your lappy is configured with 'Obtain Automatically' then you should do the same thing on the PC.

Another usefull command is "ipconfig /all" which you need to type in at a command prompt. It will show you your network card has been assigned a valid IP address, default gateway and dns servers. Basically everything you need to get connected.

I've tried everything you've told me and still no look.

Would you like me to post a few print screen's of my problem?

Thanks Matt

P.S,

I now have a wireless router now, and that is hooked up to my PC. I am recieving the internet fine through wireless on lappy, but still getting nothing to the PC, through ethernet.
