As title,

Been having problems with my internet for the past month, Always had around 7mb but from about a month ago it dropped to around 1.5mb. I phoned BT and spoke to an Asian in the call centre who carried out some line tests and said all was fine, its the router.

Anyway, been using various on-line speed checkers and they are all reporting 1-2 mb max.

Changed the router today because I had had enough, got it all swapped over and it was still the same. Phoned bt who done yet more tests and tell me everything on the line is fine so it must be the router which I know is not the case now as its brand new from the planet.

I have checked all the settings on my PC that I know of and have ran spybot search and destroy but its still the same.

Running Vista Ultimate SP 1
Belkin Router with new cables and filter.

What else can I check Guys, really getting me down.

I have'nt formatted the pc for quite a few months but am hoping I can resolve this without a format...

copied from my router page:
Data Rate Down/Up 7616/448(Kbps)

Actual Speed Test Results
Date 26/02/09 21:49:49
Speed Down 1773.01 Kbps ( 1.7 Mbps )
Speed Up 374.27 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )
Port 8095
Server speedtest1.thinkbroadband.com

What is going on ??

Thanks In Advance Guys, Regards

Chris

Hi Mate,
Results below:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 7616 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 6500 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2080 kbps

It does look like an ISP/exchange problem.

If it was a problem with the line you'd expect the sync to drop. You've got good sync rates but lousy throughput.

Have you checked the throughput at different times of the day? If the exchange is over subscribed you may find that it's okay during the day and then drops as everyone gets home from work/school.

If you want to exclude an OS problem you may be able to boot from a Linux CD and try testing from there.

Is your PC wired or wireless? I've came across people who have had slow throughput due to their wireless signal being sketchy, then when they use ethernet and run the same test the throughput jumps up to what was originally expected. If you're already connected via ethernet I would doubt if the problem lies anywhere in your equipment, since the line speeds seem stable enough. If you try running that test with different filters, routers, and PCs (if possible) and you get similar results, then the problem definitely needs to be taken up with your ISP.

if your on ADSL(BT)you could even try plugging your router into a different connection in your house and see if that makes a difference.

you might just have a faulty telephone socket.

Thanks Guys, Just been on the phone to BT for the past 2 hours and now they tell me I am losing packets between here and the exchange. All this AFTER I formatted my PC lol.

Least now they can hopefully sort it :D

Chris

 Formatted your PC?!

As a rule i work on the premis that it's BTs fault until they can conclusively prove otherwise.... they are quite incompentant when it comes to recognising a fault.

Aye mate, had all sorts of crap on my rig so needed doing anyways. Agree with them struggling to fault find very well. Took 3 very long calls in the past month.
