Ok the situation is I have a laptop downstairs which is connected direct to the router (DSL) no probs, my pc upstairs uses a long 10m cable to connect, worked fine yesterday, didn't turn pc off, came to it today and no internet.

Laptop downstairs is still fine.

PC upstairs just refuses to load a page and says 'done' instantly in the browser, no timeout.

If I release and renew my IP address I get a moment of internet access but it takes a good minute or two to load this page then dies. Back to 'done' every time I click a link or type on in the url. :-s

Oddly I can ping the router <1ms and no packet loss?

I installed a wireless card on the pc upstairs, same situation as above, renew or release to get any access then it dies ... yet signal is still full and I can ping the router!

Windows XP problem?

I'm at a loss. :(

Ok just connected my work laptop to the 10m cable upstairs and I have absolutely no problems so it's definitely the PC at fault, rebooted didn't fix, reboot of router didn't fix.

Any ideas? Anyway to force a repair of tcp/ip on Win XP? :(

Gets weirder, sound disappears and internet is fine, reboot, sound appears internet is buggered.

No conflicts in device manager? Faulty NIC or on-board sound? :(

The problem seems to swap from net to sound on each reboot, both no longer work simultaneously.

Ok I finally found the problem last night, a vmware service was cocking up my internet connectivity and IRQs, weird and annoying. It's now removed and uninstalled.

You managed to rectify the problem without one reply from another member - give yourself a pat on the back :)
