Internet connection problems with Sky (Netgear) Router

I have Sky broadband using the standard issue Netgear router.

Whilst using the internet it will work fine then after a couple of hours or so the connection to the internet will stop.

This happens whether I'm using the computer connected to the router or via wireless. It also happens when I'm using my slingbox away from home.

Basically I'm limited to a short period of use before I have to reset the router.

I've read many similar threads but nothing has really given me an answer.

I've moved recently and the router worked fine in the old house IIRC but the new connection in the new house is faster (6.5Mb vs 4Mb).

I have an identical router from beforeI joined sky. Is there any way I can copy the settings over to try the new router?

Is there any other advice anybody can give.....if I can change any setting on the Sky router...which ones should I change?

Thanks,

Ben.

It's POSSIBLY due to a massive build-up of errors on the line, but that's rather unlikely! What is much more likely is simply Sky's rubbish firmware is causing its usual problems. The Sky fw is well known for being buggy, overly locked down, and prone to dropping the ADSL connection.

Get the latest version of UberGT (aftermarket firmware) on there ASAP and see if it cures it. You can download UberGT HERE then learn how to flash the router (using this UberGT firmware rather than the one in the tutorial) by going HERE.

Good luck :)

Thanks for that. Did a fair bit of reading around last night from a google search. Plenty of things to try...will let you know how I get on.

Thanks for the tip.

P.S. Since I have an identical router not from sky I may have a fiddle with the settings on that. Apparently you can get all the details from the locked sky router despite their efforts.

Yup getting the details from the sky router is quite easy, I had to do it for a mate because there's a bug in the sky firmware that made the router fall over after a short period of online gaming (playing WiC) however flashing the router up to a new firmware fixed the issue.

details on how to do this can be found at http://philbridges.com/?p=42.

i had the same problem......some friendly guy reccomended i plugged the router in to the test socket of the phone box (test socket is behind the face plate of the main phone box in your house.....It works so GOOD now, ive never had a disconnection since i did this and this was around 2 months ago :)...also get a lot faster speeds now

If you decide to do this...(which will cure your problem) if you have any extension sockets in your house it will actually make them dead whilst the router is in the test socket......but tbh its worth it

Yup well that should be part of standard diagnostics for any ADSL line, a vary large majority of adsl faults are caused by poor/degraded wiring beyond the master test socket. Its especially important if you have an ISP that provides broadband via BTWholesale as BT engineer will charge £150+Vat for issues caused by this as they see all wiring beyond the master test socket to be the customers responsibility.

Interesting stuff this guys..will be fiddling for hours when I get home tomorrow.

I think we all know the score...you start at something because it doesn't work, it then develops into a tuning/overclocking session :)

Well I ended up using my old router which seemed to solve my internet connection woes...however I cannot remotely connect with my slingbox.

This is very frustrating to sort as I have to go off site to see if I can connect

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!
