Hi everyone. Internet cuts out very often, every few minutes, in short spasms, while under some sort of "high load" but also often happens just while using the PC. No idea what the deal is. Router is a HomeHub 5, and my motherboard's ethernet is those stupid Killer drivers.

How are you connected to the router, hardwire? Are your ethernet drivers up to date? Motherboard /chipset drivers the same?
Have you logged in to the router, is the wan connection going down?

I am connected by an Ethernet cable. As far as I'm aware all my drivers are up to date. I'm not sure what you mean by logged in to the router, and I'm not sure if the WAN connection goes down:

Does your computer lose connection to the router or does your router lose connection to the Internet?
Go here http://192.168.1.254
Which should be your router page to see if the internet connection drops

Get the latest drivers.

https://www.killernetworking.com/driver-downloads/category/other-downloads

I'd download that first, then remove all 'Killer' things, the control panel you don't need etc..

Then install the new driver (64bit)

When you have an issue, open up a CMD window (Start, run, cmd, tap enter)

ping -t 192.168.1.254

Open a second one and type..

ping -t 8.8.8.8

The 1.254 address is your HomeHub (unless you've changed it), 8.8 is a Google server.

First one will check the connection to your router, the second will check your connection to the internet.

This will tell you if it's a PC problem or router/internet problem.

Go on that link and set up a broadband quality monitor. It will constantly ping your router all though using a HH5 might mean it's disabled ICMP requests so you may have to have a wired device on a DMZ so it can be pinged. It will monitor your connection, latency etc. Any disconnections will look like a red line or red block e.g 100% packet loss. If this happens its because your connection dropped and reconnected quick enough to keep the same IP so looks like a red line or if a red block then it dropped connection and you picked up a new IP.

Wait hold on so it only happens to your PC but other devices using wifi are fine? If this is the case it's not the "internet" that cuts out its your connection to the router. Are you using powerline adapters by any chance? I used a pair of Devolo 1200Mbit/s ones which was awesome and often kept up pairing speeds of 900Mbit/s but i find the powersaving feature made them go idle which cut my connection off. And i couldn't disable this feature properly. Only way around it was to keep a connection to the router alive so either staying in a team speak server or just sending a 8byte packet ping constantly to the router.

I am connected via an ethernet cable. Really not sure where to go from here.

Just checking because working in Tech for plusnet to hear people say they are connected to a xbox or playstation or even TV with a ethernet cable but neglect to say that it's also via powerline adapters from the router can change things significantly.

Well id change cables but that's kinda common sense so i guess you have done this too. Perhaps changing ports on the router to another one.
If it still does it then it sounds like a faulty router mate. If Wi-Fi devices are fine but only your PC cuts out via a wired connection and youve changed ethernet cables and tried another port on the router. Only things left is your PC it's self and the router.
If you have a console then try hooking that up inplace of your PC and test how it gets on. That's the only alternative to rule out it's your PC playing up. If the console does it too then it's pointing at the router mate.

i had this problem lately with plusnet, i was told i needed a new router.
the problem still happens every now and then even with a nice new router

So I've finally gotten around to setting up the quality monitor. Will report back tomorrow to share results. Replacing my Ethernet cable if need be will be a major pain. I have it running under floor boards but nothing an hour of handy work wont help. Will take action when I see the results.

Have you done what bledd suggsted in #6? It will remove all the Killer "optimisation" stuff and will leave it with the basic drivers, so it will allow it to work as "normal".

Edit: Typo fix

Yup.

It's pretty solid advice! Along with the pinging.

I'm having similar problems where my computer connection drops 1-2 times a day while browsing the internet or gaming. When the connection goes down, I try to open a new page on Chrome and I get Resolving host error on the bottom left.

When you have an issue, open up a CMD window (Start, run, cmd, tap enter)

ping -t 192.168.1.254

I get replies from 192.168.1.254 but when pinging 8.8.8.8, I get request timed out.

When my computer connection goes down, WiFi devices are working fine. I'm using devolo dLAN 500 Duo powerline adapters, should I disable the powersave mode in devolo Cockpit software?

Probably powerline issues.

You should have said that in the opening post.

Try using a long cable for the time being, see if the issue subsides.
