Internet Explorer 9 Beta 15.09.2010

Doesn't pass http://acid3.acidtests.org/ i guess it is afterall a Beta so there is a bit of leeway here.

There is a pretty good explanation in the Ars feature as to why it only gets 95%.

As such, Internet Explorer's more conservative approach is probably a sound one. It means that future versions of the browser will get better, with minimal risk of breaking anything that works in current versions, while still keeping it relatively up-to-date and current.

This pragmatic approach is also why Internet Explorer 9 will only score 95% in the Acid3 test. The remaining 5% is testing features that are currently under evaluation and may be made optional, as they are superceded by other, better specifications. Implementing features that may be made optional and in any case have superior alternatives is not a good use of resources.

I cant even install it on w7 64bit, Ive tried both installers & pass all the requirements. .
It now shows in Windows componants as IE9 (even tho IE8 is installed) & get an error when trying to remove it.

Hi,

Didn't really notice the blurry text on this forum, but I do now when on Google or other sites.

What needs to be adjusted to stop this?

Cheers

Nothing can be done, IE9 installs some layer into the OS it seems that stops cleartype from working in most cases.

IE9 is beta....don't use it if you can't take the bugs.

I got a BSOD from the beta...

The first time i got a BSOD on windows 7,i never got a bsod with a firefox or chrome browser nor did i have to restart to get it up and running.

Also it would hang for me when switching between tabs on occasions ok it's a beta so i don't really care so much until the final release but now i've uninstalled it and gone back to ie 8 now my ie 8 seem's to hang sometime's which never happened before i installed the ie 9 beta,be warned people...

In case anyone gets this problem.....

I installed ie9 and found that pages were corrupted, old pages would break through flashing on to the current page, pages would break up when scrolling etc.. Turned out it was because I had D3DOverrider running (I use it to force triple buffering for games). Closed it down and ie9 was fine - guess it's due to ie9 using gpu acceleration.

When scrolling in IE9, I find it makes MPC-HC (1080p, CoreAVC) playback quite jerky.

The card is a NV 7600GS 512MB. CoreAVC is doing all the decoding on CPU. So not entirely sure why IE9's GPU work would be affecting the video playback

Edit: Actually any webpage with animation (i.e. IE has to keep redrawing) will cause the whole of Windows Vista to run jerkily. I.e. just dragging a window around will not be smooth.

I don't think this is a bug with IE, but a new problem with the CSS on the web pages you are trying to view.

From what I can tell, IE9 now is perfectly accurate when sizing fonts. Before, IE8 used to 'snap' font sizes to their closest pixel. This made them look sharper, but they where not rendered exactly as the CSS states. Instead, IE9 now renders the size perfectly which means that some font sizes seem blurry since they don't always align perfectly to pixels.

More info on this blog here.

Here is an interesting quote from above which implies this isn't just going to be an IE 'feature':

This kind of more accurate font rendering is coming though, so get ready. It's in Firefox's betas, and Chrome's nightlies. I'm sure that someone from the IE9 team who actually knows what they are talking about will do a post on this with WAY more detail soon. Before then, here's some text for you to stare at. Note the CSS change in the 3rd shot that makes the fonts "clearer."
...

If you want to stop IE9 from doing it, it looks like you have to drop back to IE8 compatibility mode.

Im going have to re-install Windows7 64bit to see if IE9 will install. Maybe it dont like my legal 'Gamer' edition.
At least I have Ghost in case it still dont work.

Just tried the latest Chrome to try out HTML5 & even with the hardware acceleration command enabled it still dont use ANY GPU % time & the fish are like stuttering pilgrims on the way to a rock concert, using 80% CPU time on 4 cores!!!
Plus Chrome has a really bad UI, I hope IE9 is not as bad.
I have to view web pages at 172% due to using a TV / remote keyboard & when opening a link on a new tab the size reduces to 100% so I have to increase the size of every new tab which is opened. What crap!
The bookmark access relies on 2 tiny arrows to click on & you cant put your favourite bookmarks at the top of the list like in IE8. Plus having a new tab to show your favourite bookmarks dont work because its size will always goto 100% too.

I knew there was a reason I used IE8 & hope IE9 has just as good a UI.

Here is the link for the GPU / HTML5 demos:

Seems really good to me, and unlike previous versions, most sites work without having to let compatibility view sort them out.

I'd like to see a download bar with my downloads on it, or at the very least some way to see "at a glance" what is downloading etc. but for a beta it's a good step in the right direction.

Of course, there will be some who simply will bash IE9 for it being a Microsoft product. ;)

I quite like it so far. Very quick indeed!

The UI will take some getting used to I think. People worrying about the favourites bar etc being ugly should realise it is BETA! One should hold out some hope everything will be more polished in the final release.

And eww, admuncher isn't free? What a crock!

Doesn't seem to work with Cufon which is a real pain for me because we use it on our main website. Even IE8 worked so it's anyone's guess how this has gone backwards.

Still, it's nice to see MS trying to improve things, it gives Google and the rest even more incentive to push harder to maintain their lead.

The speed of 9 was fine, it was inline with my latest Firefox but not as fast as Chrome 7 from the pages I browsed. Chrome loaded them faster.

I uninstalled it and won't bother with it either way.

...whereas if it was a Chrome Beta with issues, you'd be preaching how great it's going to be once the bugs are ironed out ;). FANBOI!!!

Er no?

If it was a Chrome issue I could resolve it with a Stylish script but since my primary browser is Firefox all the issues are resolved via extensions and scripts anyway, BETA or otherwise.

Oh the benefits of an open source community...

Loving it one minute, hating it the next. Beta yes but this font rendering is surely more than a bug. Forced AA off, tried switching to software rendering instead of GPU too, slight improvement (Google results was noticeably poorer compared to Firefox 3.6.10) but then I get this:

ffvie.jpg

Overlayed one browser over the other, FF to the left, IE9 to the right. Oh dear :\
