Everytime my sister starts her pc the internet comes on automatically!!! Plus she then has pop ups of bingo and other advertising!! Help!!!!!

What is happening? Any help would be great thanks.

Spyware.

Get her to download Spybot Search and Destroy and run it in Safe Mode.

EDIT: Convert her to Firefox aswell for her own good and safety. :)

How will getting her to use firefox help her safety? Firefox has more exploit vectors and in a standard install does nothing to protect you.

Teaching her basic common sense, or setting her up a limited user account (or getting her to use IE on Vista with protected mode/UAC turned on) would be much more beneficial.

Because most exploits (activex anyone) are directed to IE users browsing ****ty sites.

Security by obscurity != security. If you think that is the best solution, use opera, which has a smaller market share and a great many less confirmed security issues than FF.

Calm down dear! It was a joke, I thought the emoticon and language used showed that.

Obviously Internet Explorer users lack a sense of humour and cannot take a joke. :)

Of course the best solution is to educate users about risks and how to mitigate them, I did not say otherwise. I use Firefox because I like it and I am sure a lot of people use IE because they like it, you can't argue with peoples preferences. :)

I'm not an IE user, but bad advice is common here especially on this particular subject. I apologise if it was intended as a joke, but the constant 'use firefox' spam in every IE thread is generally meant in seriousness, and doesn't stand up to scrutiny.

I'm not arguing with preferences, I'm arguing with misleading advice...

That's fine. My advice was in my initial post, the joke a mere afterthought edited on to the end. If the original poster didn't realise my playful itention and wanted information about browsers I'd have happily directed him somewhere he can read up a little. That way he could make his own informed decision.

In your opinion it's misleading advice. If you want to discuss the performance of different browsers perhaps you should start another thread, I am sure a lot of people would love the opportunity to thrash this out with you. ;)

Already been done.

Only two pages... I have to say I am quite disappointed, in most places that thread would still be raging or would have been locked. :D

Unless she has bought it it won't be offering realtime protection. Update it, then manually perform a scan. If that doesn't work try Superantispyare too.

When you are happily free of malware install spywareblaster and IE7Pro, and use the adblocking feature. It should stop her clicking on random popups, as there won't be any.
