internet faster when phone in use!

any reason for this? im currently working on my dads friends computer. his internet connection is practically dead. once he makes a call from the house phone the connection sudenly becomes a lot faster.

bt broadband, not sure what the connection speed is, £18.99 a month

perhaps mice are eating the wires and when you use the phone it sends enough of an electric current to stun them for a bit so you get better internet.....
