Internet issues on my new Macbook Pro

I did post this originally in the internet forum section, but with no replies, I'm hoping I might get a better response here!

HeI'm hoping someone might be able to shed some light on an issue I have been having! I've just got a new Macbook Pro, and since ever since having it I have had issues with the internet. Forgive me if I;m not able to explain very well what is going on, but ill give it my best shot.

So I'm Wi-Fi to connect, which is on a 10mb connection, and using Safari on the Mac. When I first open Safari, the apple home page loads straight away no issue. I tend to be able to use the net for about 10 minutes without any issue. Then, for no reason whatsoever, Ill click on a link or type a web address, and it will take FOREVER to load, sometimes it won't load at all. I;m not talking anything heavy with pics or video, just a standard webpage, it could be anything. The other issue I have, is for example like today, I was on the guardian website, and I opened a few links in some new tabs, probably about 8 in total and the same thing always happens. Some load instantly, some take forever, so fail to open at all. If I turn the Wifi off on the Mac, and literally straight back on again, and refresh any page, it will load instantly. then after a few minutes same thing happens. Then after a while, it will go back to normal again and so forth and so forth! It's becoming quite frustrating.

The best way I can describe it, is its like the router is getting 'clogged up' and struggles to get any info to my Mac. then after a while, it de-clogs itself and were good to go for a few minutes again.

I've never had this problem, with my main pc which is connected wirelessly, or even my little netbook I was using as a laptop before this. I was able to open as many links and tabs as I wanted with no issue, and never had hang times like this whilst waiting for anything to open!

I;m not sure what is going on! When my Mac is downloading big files, it never seems to have any problems and the d/l speed stays pretty consistent. I've run speediest at various points during various days, and I'm getting a pretty steady 10mb.

Anyone that can shed any light would be a lifesaver!! I'm hoping there isn;t an issue with the Mac!!

Thanks in advance!

Open terminal and type:

Code:
ping <router ip>

You can find the router IP by checking the connection properties. Next time you have problems loading a page check to see if your ping to the router is also timing out. If it is then it looks like your WiFi connection isn't stable.

The router is a Netgear CG814WG. It was provided by the internet provider we use.

The router is only in the room next door, however it happens when I'm in the same room, so I don't it has anything to do with the distance.

As for how stable the Wifi is, I'm not sure. However I have my PS3 connected via Wifi, and I can stream HD movies direct from Netflix anyway/time and have no problem (the problems I'm having with the Mac happening whether the PS3 is streaming or not). I can also stream to my PS3 via wifi with PS3 media server, not a single problem. I have two iPhones that can connect with it no problem, as well as a netbook and a pc, which when in use I don't have any issues with.

However, the two Macbook Pro's in our house are both having the exact same problems. Mine more so, however, the other Macbook is a good 4 years old.

So I personally don't think the wifi is unstable, but I could be wrong!

Anyone else able to offer any advice?

Jessery: I'm glad I'm not the only one having this problem!!

Still ping the router IP, if it fails it will come back with a reason why it did.

You tried a different router if possible?

I had this same problem and it annoyed the crap out of me for a good while without me doing anything about it... I finally bit the bullet and switched the wireless off on my rubbish sky router and instead used a newly purchased Airport Express to run the wireless portion of the network.

Flawless ever since.

i have the same problem on a link sys wag320n

i really don't wanna fork out another £100 just for Airport Express

Ok, so I tired to ping the router, as per the advise above, and everything seemed to be ok, it just kept returning lines and lines of this.

This was whilst the internet was playing up. I've tried it a few times witht he exact same results, just different times.

Unfortunately I don't have another router to try. I know when I have had the Macbook out elsewhere connected to two other Wifi signals, I didn't have the problem.

have you tried changing the cryption to open temporarily and seeing if that fixes it?

I'm sorry, my knowledge isn't nearly where I would like it to be to be able to try anything unfortunately. If you could give me a quick walkthrough, I will happily give it a try!

I really don;t want to fork out more money to try and get this sorted, after spending $2000 on the laptop!

It;s strange that there seem to be a few people with the same issue. Something must be going on. Hopefully we can figure out what!

Wi-Fi on Lion can be a bit buggy on certain routers where it worked fine with Snow Leopard. No word from Apple as yet.

My late 2011 works fine at home on a Linksys WRT320N setup as a 5GHz AP. It's a bit buggy with my Sky Netgear V2. Take it to the parents and it won't find the router there (old Asus G thing I bought ten years ago) from sleep and it intermittently spazzes out as yours does. Disable and re-enable the Wi-Fi and it picks back up again and is fine for another hour or so.

Probably a combination of Lion and the current wireless chipset. My older Mac Laptops (2006 MBP and a 2008 uMB) worked fine with the same routers on 10.4 - 10.6.
