ok , this has been on going issue for the last 2 years, basically the internet would drop connected every 30 mins to couple of hours, i have a netgear router and when this happens the flashing led goes orange, usually if you reset the router it will 90% of the time regain connection.

Recently past 2 days, it hasnt been reconnecting after resetting and instead you would maybe wait 3/4 hours before it would eventually work again (for an hour or so).

Ive replaced all the filters on the line but it has improved nothing, now im thinking whether to replace the router or start looking at the wiring as its a pretty old house.

any advice would be much appreciated.

Suffering an ongoing issue for two years doesn't sound like much fun. I'm surprised in that time you haven't been able to pinpoint or narrow down the underlying problem. Without being given any specifics I'll just repost some of the troubleshooting basics widely found on the web or this very forum.

The general idea is to find the first telephone socket on the line leading into your premises, the so-called master socket. Assuming you've got an NTE5 (horizontal split face) line box then connect your microfilter and modem/router only to the test socket found inside the lower half.

Older line boxes require more work to properly isolate, assuming you have more than one telephone socket in the house. The master socket is identified primarily by the presence of a (1.8 µF?) capacitor inside. In the 4-wire image shown, two of these wires #3 and #4 are redundant and should be removed as a matter of course. To isolate the master socket you'll also need to pull the appropriate extension wires out of #2 and #5 - obviously leaving the external wires still connected to #2 and #5. Now connect the microfilter and modem/router to this isolated socket.

Running a modem on an extension socket is something I wouldn't advise. I will concede, however, that many people successfully do so but will more than likely be sacrificing some speed and stability.

If you've got a corded analogue telephone then you can also connect directly to the test socket or isolated master socket (no microfilter) and perform a quiet line test. Telephone 17070, option 2 on a BT line - it should be completely silent.

If you haven't already done so then you should try to gain familiarity with the modem/router web interface and connection statistics. Can you paste or screenshot them for us to check?

Along with answering the above could you also indicate some extra details,
  • Current ISP and package?
  • Telephone exchange?
  • Modem/router model number?
  • Cordless telephones used in the house?
  • Sky box connected to the telephone line?

ill tell you now that i have to replace my netgear dg834g every 8-10 months becuase of the excessive bandwidth that goes through it. I get the same problem and it occurs more and more often until i lose my rag and go and buy a new one

Surely it would just be cheaper to buy a decent router? (decent as in one that handles your specific needs)
