Internet Licence

You could combine it with a national ID scheme that everyone who has passed the "Internet test" gets noted on it.

Either that or you can just put a flat-rate tax on the Internet by combining it with the TV license and pay certain amount to the record companies.

With any type of license though it will probably be quite easy to dodge paying for it, so some kind of solution will be needed.

I truly am astounded at the amount of people who did not see the tongue in cheek meaning behind this thread.

It was a subtle dig at the people who are so lacking in common sense they end up creating threads about:

Electronic harassing (msn/email/mirc/whatever) - you have block functionality - use it ffs.

Ebay - if you do not have the wherewithal to use an internet auction site - don't!!

Phising - if it asks for your log in details - delete it. If it asks you to click on a website - delete it.

Email viruses/trojans - if it asks you to open a file you are not expecting - delete it.

Nigerian scams - if you fall for it - please for the sake of the gene pool kill yourself and help strengthen humanity.

Then the whole objective of the licence is defeated. As laid out in the OP, the point of the licence would be to prohibit the people who we don't want using the technology. When you assume that children would have free reign, like they currently do with no licence, then what really is the point? It would only be some other form of stealth taxation.

I agree that it would be hard, if not impossible to sell to the public, if the purpose of the licence was meant to be preventing children using the internet :)

I am reasonably sure that the internet will never be taxed per se, simply because it would be so politically unpopular.

Perhaps because this was so obvious it didn't actually need mentioning? Why else would someone propose an 'internet licence'? Who did you think this would be restricting?

It won't, I'm just spouting what has already come out from various government/music industry groups over the last two years or so.

Over-21 license for the Internet is a nice dream though. ;)

to access the internet, you need to pass a retinal scan, and you need a keyboard where each key can read dna and fingerprints and deny anyone where they dont match with the license holders

A government enforced internet licence is never going to work because it would be impossible to enforce on home use. I guess it's a bit like sex in this regards, so the solution would depend on thorough education of 'netequette' from an early age. :p

Or a keyboard that chops off your hand if your dna does not match the license holders

Maybe :D

I think there should be a law which forbids people to use web forums unless their English skills are of a certain standard :p

Whatever you've been smoking/drinking/popping, stop doing it now, it's affecting your brain. Badly.

Is internet access not already taxed? Surely it's taxed as a service or luxury item or something.
