i have been asked by a family member to help out with internet marketing that he is currently doing for his company. i have said yes as i'm doing very little atm though more as a favor type thing. He has said he will talk further with me on Wednesday about exactly what he requires me to do. It should be very simple as he knows i have no experience in marketing and was sure i'd be able to do what is required.

just thinking though that between now and Wednesday I'd like to look into marketing online so i already know something about it but even better if i can suggest new ideas to him.

any way i am hoping perhaps people here have experience in internet marketing and if there is any advice you can give? i'm thinking of things like digg, social networking websites etc.

He will be marketing books so i am wondering if there is a well known way to market books online.

please know that i am not asking for someone to do my work just any tips you can offer before i have my talk with him and start this "work".

thanks.

I've found marketingexperiments.com to be very worthwhile. Lots of good tips on there. :)

thanks for the suggestion, i actually bookmarked that site a while back for a read when bored but completely forgot i had it so will give that a read after i have finished this book i have atm.

As said marketingexperiments is good. Also check out www.e-consultancy.com , they've got a lot of white papers on theory etc. What area are you going to be helping with? Design/coding? Mailshots?

tbh i have no clue, he hasn't really explained what i'll be doing. reading the book he suggested it talks about how to make the most of amazon and the reviews and then about correctly using blogs so i assume this will be what he is after.

By mailshots do you mean mass mailing, does that work? i had tested it for my own site but all my mails would go into the junk folder of the recipient. do your mails go to the inbox. do you use any s/w or have a program build specially for it. please advise.

Really depends how to go about it on who you are targeting and what you are trying to achieve. My limited experience has been to a small number of known people (around 200), and from a trusted email address; it was more of a newsletter than anything else. Because of this we could just use MS Outlook to BCC the contacts.

If you are planning on being more ambitious then you'll really need 3rd party software which can help with design/anti spam/tracking etc. There's a lot of packages out there though I remember when I was looking into it www.constantcontact.com was one of the cheapest for small scale mailshots.
