bit of an update on this one:
Finally got round to having time to try vista again - but net still not working. So i formatted the vista partition and reinstalled - same thing, net not working. So i loaded up the XP partition to find this thread with that netsh command, but XP was doing the same thing - http was refusing to work (everything else was fine - torrents etc). So i was panicking slightly and decided to format the vista partition again - and as soon as i started doing so, the internet came back to life in XP! Very odd!! I'm going to reinstall vista later and try that command out.
