Hi there,

I'm living in a flat within a house of about 4 flats all owned by one landlord.

The landlord has a virgin media hub on the ground floor providing wireless internet to all of the flats. I'm on the second floor and the connection isn't good.

What are my options for improving my connection? I'm not too knowledgeable on the subject so would appreciate some suggestions.

I thought that I could possibly start another connection in my flat (Paying monthly) so that I could connect directly via a cable which would be ideal.

Although after just speaking with virgin they have said that this isn't possible . .

Thanks in adv

If it's a separate flat (ie separate household) there is no reason why Virgin shouldn't wire you up as a separate property with your own cable and modem. You may have to argue with them if they consider the flats to be one address.

An easier alternative is to put the superhub into modem mode, and then connect a separate router. Superhubs are basically cheap and nasty, and have rubbish wireless. By attaching a separate router, you should be able to get a decent wireless connection (depending on walls, distance, obstructions, etc).

I like the Asus routers. They are not cheap but they work very well, such as the RT-AC66 or there's an upcoming AC56 that's very fast. Whatever you get, make sure it's dual channel (can run both radios at the same time) and has the memory and processing power to deal with the bandwidth available and number of users in the house.

The cheapest thing would be to run some ethernet cable and plug directly into the modem. Then you plug your PC in your flat at the other end. Use cat 6 shielded for a long run. Faster, cheaper and more secure, but it may not be practical to drill holes and run cables.

Thanks for the reply.

Just contacted Virgin and protested that the flats were separate addresses with seperate post etc. They are going to send someone to come and check whether or not they can install a new connection in the separate flats.

Minimum 2 days maximum 2 weeks. :(
