Internet randomly stops working in vista

Hi,

So I restarted my comp last night because the soun was looping, and upon restart everything starts crashing. Services, IE, MSN, everything. I can't connect to the internet either. I'm behind a router and virgin cable, and I can see the other computers on the network OK, I can even bring up command and ping bbc.co.uk successfully, but whenever I try to connect to MSN, run steam, use firefox, nothing works, and usually results in the program crashing.

I'm using vista 64.

I've tried a system restore but even though I have SR set to on, apparantly it has not created any restore points. Nice.

I also gave up and decided to do a complete reformat, but when I boot using the windows disc, and it prompt me to "press any key" to boot from disc, it will not recognise any of my keystrokes and just boots into windows :S.

Have also ran multiple virus/malware scans and have found nothing.

Have no clue what could be causing this. Speedy replies would be appreciated as I am at a friends house on their comp for a while, but will have to go home soon.

This is more of a Vista issue than a networking issue. The applications and DNS service are crashing but the network is working fine.

try re-installing the drivers maybe. But if it's as messy as you've made it sound i'd say backup and format.

Is it true that I can enable "USB dos" in the bios to fix this?
