i have tried plugging in the router to the main phone line and no change. The phone cable and bt box is over 25 years old.

Have planed to change all the phone cables in the house right back to the bt box in the xmas hols

any ideas on what else i could do before doing that?

Thanks

i dont have a bt master socket all i have is this box

bottom cable is to the out side (bt's line)

top cable is our inside cable

i cleaned the connectors in the box and cut the end off the the cable so there is fresh cable on the connectors.

tried 3 different routers

I think I would fit my own master socket, buy a decent one and filtered faceplate off the bay and replace that horrible box.

i have managed to source a proper bt master socket with the test socket but iv been told that im not allowed to replace it because its bt's equipment?

not sure if that's right.

im not sure it is a problem with my equipment but isp will not help until i can prove it.

The cable is bts, hence if you ever cause damage you have to pay for it, not sure what the rules are on terminating a line. If that ugly thing on the wall belongs to bt then you wouldn't technically be allowed to touch it.

Although if it were my house it would be in some carrier bag only to be put on the wall if ever bt visited :P

The "ugly thing on the wall" does indeed belong to BT, it is the demarcation point between their side of the line and yours. Technically you shouldn't touch it as if anything becomes a problem you're then liable for the fault and BT will charge you for any work that needs to be done to put it right.

As Azues05 says above, other than it being a bit naughty there is nothing stopping you fitting a master socket and if you ever have a line fault just be damn sure its not something you've caused and then just replacing the old brown box (which a BT engineer visiting would possibly replace anyway).

You're fine. Anything inside your premise you're allowed to change. Engineers aren't really going to know you had the old terminal connected, and if ever asked just deny it.

You really can't damage anything as it only requires connecting the 2 bottom wires...

No, that is absolutely not how it works so please don't go around spreading misinformation. A quick Google will tell you that, as would asking any telecoms engineer with half a clue.

The line box is as I said earlier is the demarcation point between your equipment and BT's exchange iine, the only people allowed to touch it / modify it in any way is someone from BT.

Whilst I agree you can quite easily change it and get away without any issues you should still be aware of the consequences.

Oh, and a BT engineer would know as the official NTE5's have the BT / OpenReach logo on them and AFAIK you should not be able to buy those from anybody.

I can't see how any internal wiring issue could cause the noise margin to take a dive so regularly every 4 minutes or so.
It suggests to me that there may be something generating electrical or RF noise that's adverseley affecting your adsl connection or the router itself (a Netgear 834GT at a guess?). Do you have anything in the house that switches on and off that follows that pattern, e.g. central heating or fridge? If you countinue the routerstats plot through the night does it continue doing the same thing?
Your sync speed looks pretty low for the attenuation too, so it could be something generating some noise all the time, and if you've tried moving the router to the master socket without any change it may be mains-borne rather than RF.
Or it could just be a dodgy router - could you try a different one to see if it behaves differently?
This site might be worth a read for noise-related problems http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/rein.htm

You've probably already done it but check that your router idle time is set to 0/always on/nailed up.

I have just replaced the cable from the green bt box and connected it to a new bt box (replaced with cat 5 cable as its all i had)

My connection speed has gone from 5mb up to 9mb which im happy about but im still getting the drop outs.

i cant think of anything that could be causing interference but im going to check that tomorrow when i have more time.

The router is a Netgear DG834G

Router idle time is 0 so that's ok

been thinking about getting a sky branded Netgear DG834GT and flashing it with some custom firmware to see if that may help
