Internet sarcasm - 'cos it's of course different to normal sarcasm...

Slightly more helpfully, it is normally more difficult to tell because on a written medium you lose many of the verbal and non-verbal aspects of communication. Just adding a smiley doesn't automatically make it sarcastic though, it might illustrate what you were aiming for but that doesn't mean you've managed it.

Usually knowing the persons view's/beliefs/posting style helps tell them apart.

That used to be a great put down/come back. It's said now so often it just shows up the teller as somebody who couldn't think of any witty reply him/herself.
