Internet Security software

Right I'm lookingt for some good total internet security software.

i would like reccomendations for

Free

and

Paid.

So far I am considering

BitDefender Total Security 2012, 1 User, 1 Year License = £15.99

or

eset (50% student discount) - £19.99.

any other better?

Edit: was also looking at Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 - £12.48 or Kaspersky Pure Total Security - £7.98 (whats the difference between these?)

+1 for ESET Smart Security - Was a reseller of it when I worked at a previous company. Never had any problems other than sometimes being too tight, but easily rectified :)
 
Just go for the free stuff.

Truth is, whether you pay or not, if your pc gets a virus, its reformat and reinstall time.

I use AVG free as my antivirus and comodo firewall as my firewall.

Havent had a virus penetrate my system in years, and when a virus has tried a drive by download via google images, AVG has kicked in and saved my bacon.

Can you ask for more?
 
I haven't had one of these since before broadband, with proper AV and common sense there really isn't a need behind a NAT'd router with built in windows firewall along with your choice of AV.

Kaspersky is now at version 2013 with "Safe Money" Free to upgrade of course so if you buy 2012 at a cheaper price your key will still work.

They both do well with heuristic detection which should help to protect from something as yet not known as a virus.
 
I use kapersky (get it free via uni), never had a problem.
Had eset for years before and that was also, very very good.

Windows security essentials has to be the most useless pile of junk though, it stopped nothing and blocked valid network connections no matter how many times I configured it.

+1 to that. I had a virus a couple of weeks ago from it and totaly killed my C drive.
