Interview Attire

This discussion cropped up today between mates as one of them has an interview this week.

Basically he is going to wear a cream/beige suit... now the role is in IT for a bank. My first thought was, you cant wear that as you'd look like a spice boy, harping back to that Cup Final and Liverpool.

However are my views old fashioned? Are beige suits now more suitable for interviews? I suppose the summery weather helps a bit....

Just something thats never occurred to me and want to make sure im not that out of date with things :o

Tell him to wear the cream suit, as i'm also going for a job interview for an IT job at a bank this week and you never know - it might be the same position.

I'll be wearing a dark charcoal suit, a blue or white shirt, cufflinks and a tie.

I did wear a dark-buff coloured suit to an interview in the summer once. But there was no way I was wearing black - was like a billion degrees.

I recall a mate whose Dad is the manager of a extremely exclusive Italian suit shop in London so has a couple of nice suits. He rocked up to a £18k a year job in a £3k suit :p He did get it whoever.

Cream suits are for outdoor wear/weddings etc not for an interview

And Drug Dealers in Panama.

I wore black trousers, a chequered shirt and a leather jacket to my interview a month ago. Couldn't be bothered to buy or hire a suite. I got the job dressed like that although it's hardly a high ranked position but it is in an office.

Pencil Sharpening Engineer?

:p

If your name is Martin Bell and you are interviewing Col Gaddhaffi then yes, otherwise dark or navy blue with white or blue shirt, low key tie and black shoes will do

Anything else and you risk looking like a knob ;)

For traditional industries like banking, law or accountancy traditional dress is usually expected. That means a suit in charcoal grey or navy blue (not black and certainly not cream) and black, polished toecap Oxford lace-up shoes. In an interview situation I would be especially cautious and stick to a single-breasted 2 or 3 button jacket with a solid pattern and a step lapel etc.

Perhaps an IT role grants greater leniency, but wearing a cream-coloured suit is committing interview hari-kiri!

Probably not for an interview, but if he really wants to wear it, then I wouldn't discourage him.

I don't know what it is about cream suits, the light summer ones are kinda cool or am I just getting really old?? I'd like a suit like it.

I think they are awesome, wouldn't wear one for a job interview tho!

(At least not at a bank, if you are applying for a position as a cocaine courier then that's a different matter)

In a call centre-ish role but at the moment pencil sharpening is one of the time wasting practices as it isn't that busy at the moment :p

Good stuff at least you're getting payed to do that, I'm enjoying my unemployed status at the moment :D
