research the company and the role as much as possible. Also research all the relevant people, if you have names of manger/ceo/interviewer then do some spy work on linkedin and facebook. Also research the companies competitors.
If you can try to call a secretary/HR person to get more advice and info about the company and the interview. If you are lucky they will report that to the person in charge of hiring and you gain more brownie points.

You want to be able to ask lots of relevant questions about the people and the company.
An interview is not a one way process- you have to see if you are right for the company. There is actually a growing trend in the US for companies to offer you decent money ($2-3K) if they offer you a job and you decline or quit within a few months. Companies want people who want to work for them, not people who are only there for a salary. It is cheaper to pay some one 'fly'-off than pay them a salary if they aren't motivated.

Other tips. Don't panic at all. Even if things are going **** up just forget about and concentrate on doing the best you can with the remainder of the interview. Treat it as a practice. Everyone makes mistakes and that isn't typically a reason to turn away a good employee. You can also make a light hearted joke about it.

Be kind, polite and courteous to everyone you meet, even cleaning people, security etc. Open a door or saying bless you to someone who might be a manager may gain you another brownie point.


It is OK not to know the answer to some questions. Instead of BSing around, just straight up tell them and move on.

It is also important to brag. Bragging has many negative connotations but that is actually related to how and when you say things, not what you are saying.

After the interview always follow up with a phonecall to the person in charge of hiring to thank them for the opportunity. An email to all of the people you spoke to thanking them as well goes a long way.

If you do get a rejection phone up again, thank them for the opportunity and try to find out the main reasons for rejection. If you like the company then make them aware that you would love to apply for any future opportunities that might have a better match to your skillset.
 
Ask for a glass of water, and when they ask a question take a sip of water.
It'll give you a moment to collect your thoughts, and hydrate you if your mouth goes dry due to nerves.

Another good tip is to repeat the question rephrasing it in your words. This A) ensures you understood the question, B) buys you lots of extra time and your subconscious will be working on the answers priming relevant information.

Say something like:
"If I understood you right then you are asking me if ***REPEAT QUESTION****".
Well that is an interesting question, ***SOME ANSWER***"

Also, don't be afraid to ask them to repeat the question or rephrase it if you don't understand. Even if you do a=understand as above it will buy you lots of extra time.
 
Be honest and make sure you have a long term goal, even if its a bit silly. Missed out on a few jobs for just people that guy who didn't know what he wanted and got my current one for saying I wanted to be Prime Minister! (I have a politics masters so it made sense and wasn't an arrogant want)

Also make chit chat when they talk to you, I hate small talk but talking about your interests and things when you turn up just makes them remember you a bit more

Update:

Just got back from my interview and it went really well, from what i can gather!

It was so relaxed, i wasn't expecting it to be as it was at all. They were laughing and joking, i was like what!?

I hear back the end of next week so fingers crossed!
