Hey All,

Handed in an application form today for Toys R Us at the Metro Centre and got a phone call just before asking if I could go down tomorrow at 11 for an interview. Just wondered if any of you work at Toys R Us or have done and what it was like. Any idea on what the pay will be like as that wasnt mentioned on the application form.

Any advice for the interview baring in mind this is my first job and it will run along side college.

Thanks a lot, Sam

Just don't play with the toys in your interview!!

I'd have thought pay was £5-£6ph.

To be honest, should be an easy job, just make sure you aren't an idiot in the interview.

I'd have thought that the job would be a 'Customer Services Assistant', so you'll be stacking the shelves, and operating the tills, most retail shops have that job title.

The better you know the products they sell the better you chances. I had little experience on the till in my work place when I started but knew about the majority of the items they sold (was a computer store) so it helps a lot.

Sounds ok to me, Its just something to bring a little bit of money in over the christmas as I dont receive any EMA from college so have no money half the time.

Do you not get EMA because your over 18 or because of your parents wage bracket? As I heard there is a form of EMA for over 18's now but cannot remember what they call it. Heard it on the local radio sometime back not sure if or when it will be introduced.

Adult Learning Grant. Thats 30 quid.. In your pocket ;)

Hey dude, I worked at Toys R us during my student time at college and was there for two years. Theres so many different roles in the store, you have:

Front of Store which focuses on returns and complaints (stay clear). Then you have tills which is self explanitory (avoid, their outdated and always mess up)

You then have babies section which usually the female employees work on.

Theres the bike Isle (quite fun with the right people plus they'll teach you about bikes, very basic stuff though)

Then theres pickup, this is the area is your responsibility to collect larger items that cant be collected on the shop floor. People bring specific tickets for bikes and climbing frames etc and you have to run around half the store carrying heavy items all day. Id avoid this area as its knackering plus a lot of people got back problems from working on that section.

Then there's the best role, MULTIMEDIA. I cannot stress enough how much easier and more fun this section is compared to every other section. You work with all the electricals, games consoles, Tv's, PC's etc. You get to show everyone how stuff works and theres no heavy lifiting. Its the most simple job in the whole store and the most fun so WORK ON MULTIMEDIA. Express your interest in that area and they will make note of it. Even lie saying you build computers as its almost a guarenteed way of getting on it.

One last thing if the interviews are the same still as a few years ago be prepared to be there for around 2 1/2 - 3 hours. Its ridiculous but thats what they do. Make your voice known, speak up a lot and be prepared to pretend to sell an item to a customer through role play. The best advice I can give you though is dress in a suit, or shirt and tie, smart shoes. Its noticed and will impress, its one thing they have to check. Theres not much else to say, but if you want to talk my emails in my trust just drop me a line and ill help best I can. Good Luck!

edit: oh and the pay was around £5.40 when I was there, depends on your age though

Excellent post sith.

I am 16 (17 on Saturday) and dont get EMA because the household income is over 30K.

The multimedia section definatly sounds like the one to go for and I have lots of expierence in building computers and general gadgets so I will express this in the interview tomorrow.

Dress wise I dont have a suit or anything so was just thinking along the lines of a smart shirt, jeans and smart shoes. Will this give me a serious disadvantage to getting the job?

As for the interview time, they didnt mention it on the phone but are they done in groups are 1 on 1 and I hope it isnt 3 hours long as I have college at 1pm.

Never, ever get a till job. Shelf stacking or warehouse work is much better (but neither are particularly great :p) I wouldn't miss an opportunity to get into Admin work either actually, probably the best job you can get in a store like that.

Hey hyper, the outfit that you mentioned should not cause any problems, nice shoes and a shirt and tie should do the trick. Well I hope your prepared to be late for college lol as only two years ago they did group interviews with about eight people in the room. They did a maths test and certain others whilst i was there, im not too sure if its changed though, it may possibly have but be aware you could be there for a long time. Id let college know so it doesnt look bad walking in too late.

Yea stick with multimedia mate its by far the best section to work on. Be ready for the Toys R us manager way of life, they try to put pressure on selling but take no notice, they dont fire people for not selling a lot. Plus their underpaid and overworked so their bound to be a bit cranky.

I would rather it was a group interview than 1 on 1 I think so I know what other types of people are going for the job.

Just to keep you all informed the interview went well this morning.

I arrived a little bit early so had a scout around the store before going to the front desk and finding out where to go. The interview began with 6 of us and we were paired into groups and had to find out as much as possible about your partner and then deliver this back to the group. My partner was rather shy which was an invite for me to dominate this part of the interview where I began to ask all the questions and hopefully made a good impression to the interviewer than I was confident and not too shy. After this we had to design a poster for Toys R Us at Christmas and then choose parts of everyones poster to make one final big poster. My posted was basically a Toys R Us banner at the top, a xmas tree all decorated and all the other things you would relate to xmas but no presents under the tree which was surrounded by children with sad faces. I then wrote underneath "Dont dissapoints your kids this xmas, shop at Toys R Us". Which went down well and ended up on the final poster. After this we were given a basic skills test which I found rather easy and then were called into a room and asked the usual questions of why I wanted to work at Toys R Us, etc etc. I feel I handled these all quite well and they said they couldnt tell me if I had the job or not but I would hear back from them in a couple of days.

I will keep you all updated.
