Not sure if I undersatnd. Your previous job paid £50k but you got sacked because a charcater reference refused to give you a reference. But they then offered for you to stay to provide training to a new person so they presumably trusted your character sufficiently to carry out that task... At the same time you must have been at the company long enough to be 'trained up' so presumably you had been there a good while. Why exactly would they be obsessed with a character reference from your previous place if they had first hand experience at working with you?
