Interview tomorrow...

I had an interview not to long ago... I wore a suit.. no one else did.

Guess who got the job? :)

Congrats - but, on the flipside I went for an interview once (was quite a decent job) and I just turned up in wearing a shirt and some trousers. I have suits, I just couldn't be arsed. A few others wore suits. They didn't get the job.

When going for an interview the minimum I would go for is a shirt, trousers (chinos OK), dark socks and proper shoes, even if the standard employee dress is casual.

Only exception might be for some kind of physical job where I might be asked to take a 'test' / demonstration etc.

Obviously for any sort of office job I would say smart trousers and a tie minimum. Even for internal interviews I've always brought in a tie even though I don't normally wear one.

Smart trainers, there is an oxymoron :p Why do people think jeans could fall into the category smart causal (or smart & casual). At least smart casual is easier to define for men - Shirt, trousers and shoes (no tie, polished shoes). Womens idea of smart casual is open to even more interpretation and when women get it wrong it's normally ten times worse than when men get it wrong!

I for one couldnt work in a game store, this might sound very stereotypical but every game shop I have went into they have been full of freaks :o

/goes to bed, gets ready to read some flaming tomorrow...

Got an interview with GAME on Thursday for a part-time position. Im just going for the smart casual look. Nice shirt, trousers and shoes, no tie or full suit. Hope is pays off.

Wish me luck.

i went to a interview once for a trainee web development job!

i turned up in a suit etc and everyone else was dressed casual. jeans and t-shirt. i felt like a right plum, but the first thing they said was it was nice to see someone making an effort ;)

Did you get the job?

Go in wearing a Tuxido and bow tie,.......would be funny to see lol, oh, not to forget a top hat....show proper dedication to getting a job :)

LOL.

You forgot the pocket watch.

Really though, you have to think about what job you are applying for, find out what clothing is appropriate and go for it. Wear something you feel comfortable in.

EG. If you are going for store manager position, then absolutely, wear a suit. Conversely, if you are going for the shop assistant role and have been told "smart/casual", then a suit is definitely over the top and you may end up feeling (and then looking) uncomfortable during the interview.

Remember, the interviewers would be looking to see if you will "fit in". If you dress up in a tuxedo, hat, pocket watch, etc and talk with a plum in your mouth, then the interviewers might feel that you dont belong in their store.

A suit is never over the top in my eyes, you say "if you are going for the shop assistant role and have been told "smart/casual", then a suit is definitely over the top", but when my boss leaves me in charge at work and tells "do a good job while I'm away, I'm counting you you" then I don't just try and do a 'good' job, I try an exceed his expectations and do an 'excellent' job, if it was me I would use the same philosophy with the interview, he asked you to dress casually, don't, exceed his expectations, stand out, get the job.

I do recruitment at my place and It's a casual dress code, of course interview candidates always show up in their sunday best so they do stick out a bit.

The point is you arent going to be the first person to have turned up dressed up smart, so it doesnt do any harm.

On the other hand [at my place], if a person turned up looking a bit more casual, it wouldn't count against them either.
