At the same place I work. But to go from general worker to section manager, it't the next step up for me, we don't have team leaders. I haven't had many interviews, but this is the first time I am going to be going in to an interview and not be bricking it.

None of the other applicants know the companies software as well as I do, or how the track and trace systems work, at all. Even the current managers and the shift managers turn to me for that. Only one other has the experience I do working with other departments and the clients, and as he works nights, he doesn't seem have the same rapport with them as I do. "I know Martin can do that" is probably the most used sentence at my site! :D So I know I have the technical ability, which is why I don't feel so nervous. A little nervous yea, but I am actually looking forward to this one.

But, how do I convince them I have the ... I dunno ... personality for it? Most are going to the interview in uniform (or say they are at least) whilst I will be shirt and tie. But I know I need to show that I have the presence to manage staff without looking cocky or arrogant. It doesn't help that despite being 30 people assume from my looks that I am 20 at most.

Imagine the interviewer naked. This is a very useful way of feeling relaxed about stressful situations. If you start to get wood, try to surreptitiously tickle the old chap until climax and flaccidity returns. Resist the urge to moan.

Try to answer the questions succinctly and answer the question asked, not the question you've prepared for. Also remember that the interviewer wants to understand your abilities so don't undersell yourself and use examples to back up any statements you make.

Don't try and be someone else or make things up. Keep a level head, try and steer answers towards your strengths. A few deep breaths before you go in and good luck. :)

Good Luck fella. Just be yourself and don't try too hard, natural and calm is the best way forward.

this... altho tho when asked the question...

"where do you see yourself in 12 months time" the best reply could well be "well your chair looks comfier than mine"

Good luck mate.. I've just been thru the same situation, will be promoted as of monday :-) talking future, vision and targets seemed to work for me

Thanks guys. Nerves are starting to kick in now heh.
Shirt and tie certainly feel odd. My uniform is combats and a polo shirt

Soon to be hated by your previous co-workers as you crack the whip on their backs ! :P

good luck sir

Just stay calm. Make sure you think before you speak. Even if you have to look like you're rebooting for a second!

This is excellent advice.

Good luck Woden :)

Good luck mate

but remember, it's not what you know but who you know....and who's **If it's filrering then you know it's shoudn't be disguised ** your licking FACT

You may be the go to guy with all the answers at worker level, but you are stepping into a managerial role - you need to impress how you will manage people.

Have you managed the section in managers absence? How did you cope? How did you do?

They already know your background and skills, but now they aren't recruiting for a worker, they are recruting a manager and you have to remember to come across as a manager.

Does that make sense or clear as mud?!
