Intranet doc management system

Currently at work we have many files on the company network. The main problems lies with people saving files off to a different location, creating copies of a certain file, sometimes copying it to their desktop and editing it. When they view the other file it has been updated many times since they updated theirs.

We find ourselves searching through many folders to find things like templates that has been saved off elsewhere which someone has made changes to then someone else has made changes to the other file

A new project for us at work is to create an intranet so people can easily access the files and sort them by most accessed, date, size etc and update them when needed

Someone in the know about intranets has recommended programs - Basecamp and Wordpress.

Has anyone ever used these programs or know how they work? I have worked at a company where developers used Visual Studio and C# to create a document management system but there was 7 developers (4 senior) that took 3 months to build the system. Other projects were going on at the same time and I had little to do with it.

I have basic knowledge of html and dreamweaver
 
No doubt sharepoint will be recommended, despite it sucking! :P

We use SVN to store important docs, and it's versioned. Google Docs we also use. Though we are seeking an alternative should there be one.

Thanks guys. Im looking into Alfresco with the cloud test and will do the same with Knowledge tree. Then look at SNV and sharepoint

Do these types of systems allow for a customizable wizard? One of the key things is that people are guided through the process of editing and saving documents (using a wizard specific to our company)
 
Update. I am currently installing Knowledge tree on a VM Server 2003 machine. It needs Zend server to run...

Zend Server Silver - 1 year subscription € 1,195.00
Zend Server Gold - 1 year subscription € 2,195.00
Zend Server Platinum - 1 year subscription € 3,195.00

Then a Knowledge tree 100 user licence is 10, 12 or 15k a year!

I reckon we could get some developers to built us a custom intranet document managing system for less than that!

Yes sharepoint isnt 100% perfect but it can certainly provide a quick 80% solution out of the box.

Its certainly good for document management and lists. Also easy to grasp and update.

I may be biased as im a SharePoint admin though!

I've just been looking at the pricing, CALs etc as Sharepoint does seem like the way to go.

I will download the trial tomorrow from here

Can this be installed on Server 2003? I will be using a Virtual Machine. We are a medium sized business with around 100 employees. Are the CALs annual costs or are they forever. So about 9k + 4k for the standard sharepoint server licence. Is the 9k an annual cost?

You should probably look at SharePoint Services 3.0 as its free. No point in paying for the full MOSS features unless you really need them.
 
Thanks ringo, ill look into sharepoint services 3.0 tomorrow. I have just read the following post below. I think we do require 'Content managment' and 'Search over your content' thats what we are mainly looking for in a system. - Sounds similar to what matty wants

Moss gives you lots of out of the box features (Default features) like Content managment and workflow and Search over your content also you can integrate Infopath and other applications with moss easily and still you hardly forced to write code. but in some situation if you need to customize it you can do that by creating different webparts and using Moss features.

How to use MOSS:
you need to install SharePoint in your system (you need to have a server. you can use a virtual machine to install server and moss). Then you can customize sharepoint by using Visual studio Template you can find these template in the following address:(for vs 2008)

Then for example you can create a Web part and then deploy to your site and enjoy that. So you have sharepoint power but you add more value when you can customize everything in sharepoint.
