Hi, i am Panyan and i am a PC enthusiast as all of you are. I have been repairing computers and upgrading them for about 10 years now. I have never, though, felt the need to join a forum. I decided to becuase i want to ask about some upcoming projects. Anyway, before i get to that, i want to show you what i did last weekend :)

I bought a Q8200 from ebay, got some arctic silver and a arctic cooler freezer pro 7 V2 from overclockers. This is the first time i have EVER tinkered with a cpu and it wasnt so much of an upgrade as an opportunity to expand my knowledge :p

Enjoy the image below and please comment :)

These are BOTH BEFORE and AFTER pictures - the original was the E8400 with this cooler, i replaced it with the Q8200, using arctic silver 5 and the arctic cooler freezer pro 7 V2

(i know a lot of you will say that the Q8200 is worse than the E8400, but this is my budget CAD machine which benefits from more cores than higher clock speeds for rendering and ALSO im not comfortbale overclocking on such a low-powered PSU :) SO for me the Q8200 is better than the E8400 :) )

One problem i had was that i thought the stock cooler just used the intel push-pin system, but it used a backplate instead. I had to use pliers to cut off metal rings that held the screws/springs in the old cooler so that i could use the backplate and screws on the new cooler for a better fit and more effiecient thermal movement. You can see below how the old screws and backplate fitted with the new arctic freezer mounting plate :)

this is the one i was referring to:

yea, FOr future reference, the Arctic coolers come with Arctic cooling paste pre applied, which is as good as or better than AS5.

Also, how did you manage to upgrade and repair computers for 10 years and never have to tinker with a CPU? I had to on one of the first few PC's I upgraded...

What was wrong with the pre-applied paste on the Freezer 7 pro?

Oh, and welcome to the forum :)

I read that it was better to apply fresh stuff becuase the pre-applied stuff had been sitting in the open air in a warehouse for god-knows-how-long, ALSO, i wanted the experience of applying my own :)

I never really tinkered with a cpu, never got the chance, but now i have, so im happy :)

yea, its good that you have, I was just surprised it hadn't come up before.

The pre applied stuff will have been in the packaging etc, so wouldnt be that bad, although I do always apply my own as well.
