Investigating The Frostbite Mantle Implementation

I had/have no issues with Direct X, it's what we've all used up to now, it's done a good job.

What Mantle has done for me, is show me that as good as Direct X currently is, it can be better, what happens in the future doesn't really matter imo, if Mantle stays then I'm happy, if Mantle goes and is replaced by a new and improved DX12 then I'm happy.

For me that's all that matters, regardless of the colour of your chosen gpu.

Agreed. DX has and will continue to do a good job, but for those that want a little bit more (vram too :D) there is Mantle.

Hmm, strange timing having only recently read this thread tonight. Just played BF4 for an hour and then focus switched to desktop with a message saying your computer is about to run out of memory, then 2 mins later I got the following error message as BF4 crashed.

GFX card is the R9 295X2 OC and Afterburner reported VRAM usage at 7.5 GB.

Never got that when I was running my R9 290X although have just gone to 14.6 beta drivers and this was the first time I played the game with those drivers.

Halve the vram usage and that will be your actual vram usage as afterburner doubles it. That message is usually caused by having a manual pagefile size below 8gb.

Exactly but it won't stop some from complaining.

That's interesting but page file is same size it has always been. (16GB). Also system itself was using 8GB with reported 7GB physical RAM free.

Is it worth upping the page file? If so to what size? Will see if the issue happens again later in the week when I play some more.

That's a strange one then. Just use auto, i assume you use that anyway. It indicates you ran out of memory but if you had plenty of page file then that should not of happened. Probably just BF4 throwing a fit for some reason.

I've been playing some more Plants Vs Zombies on my 1gb HD 7770. I've discovered that i can now use higher settings on Mantle than i can on DX, even though the card only has 1gb of vram. All the vram is used up, actually im using about 1100-1200mb but performance is fine and is faster than DX. I guess im happy, though i find it strange that i can exceed the vram limit of the card and performance remains fine and faster than DX. Using mainly medium settings, 1200P and a few settings on high. On DX medium was just about playable, but it had some drops into the 30's. Same settings on Mantle lowest so far 50fps.
