Investment

I am a Nigerian Prince, simply invest your moonies with me and next week me will returns return $5,9million USD to your bank account.

Chuck it in premium bonds. I average about £50 a month winnings(admittedly I've maxed out the contributions though) works out much better than any saving accounts interest.

IMO you won't make enough from minerals to be worth a damn unless you're buying millions worth. Stay away from stocks unless you know what you're doing(even then it can be iffy).

Or gamble it :D

Or give it to immrchris;

Pretty decent return rate :)

lol

The monthly interest at say 2% on the maximum Premium Bonds allowance is more than your 'average £50 a month' winnings.

Thanks for demonstrating how utterly poor Premium Bonds are.

£30000 @ 2% works out at £605.53 interest so £5 more than averaging £50 per month. I have had months where I won £500 and once I've won £1,000. The £50 figure was pulled from my average winning over the past 4 years.

I didn't think any savings accounts were at 2% where money was available at a week or two notice?

(Have I buggered up :()

If £50 is your average winning then surely that includes the fact that some months you might have won more (and conversely, in some months will have won less). Either that, or your understanding of what 'average' means is different to mine!

The maximum is £40k, not £30k.

Numerous accounts which can be used for savings offer zero notice access and pay more than 2% after tax.

£30k in premium bonds? Oh dear.

You can easily beat that with a mix of a Santander 123 current account for the first £20K giving you 3% on 17K and lesser rates on the first £3k, with the rest on something like Ratesetter where even 1 month bonds will get you 2.7%.

The nominal interest rate on Premium bonds is only 1.3% though.

Ha ****e :( I've screwed up :(

Right time to get searching then. I didn't actually know the max had been increased.

Kinda glad I posted despite being proved wrong :D

Thank you :)

How long do you want to invest for?

Been thinking about putting together a 'guide to' thread, not sure how much loving it would get though.

9 minutes... you're slowing down.

https://www.fundingcircle.com (6.1% average return) Business lending and backed by the Government

Or alternatively something like http://www.zopa.com/lending (5.2 average return) personal lending.

They both look interesting and have good rates of return, possibly not good if you may need to withdraw your money quickly. A friend of mine has invested in Funding Circle and is positive about it. I'm tempted to do it myself, saves having a few thousand in an account with almost no interest..

I have £1000 to invest in something, I was thinking gold or silver. anyone have any good ideas?

How about one of those peer lending sites like Zopa? I wouldn't bother investing such a small amount in gold/ silver - esp. if you don't really know what you are doing.
