IP to DNS site

I have recently setup my Buffalo Linkstation so that I can access it from the internet by typing in "ftp://myipaddressgoeshere" however my IP address changes usually every week and it is difficult to remember a new one, I seem to remember a DNS site being mentioned that automatically updates so that you don’t have to type in your IP address, you can instead simply type in a web address.

Does anybody know what this site is?

Thanks for your replies, I'm now setup with dyndns, I chose that one as after browsing through the pages on my Netgear router I came across it. Thanks for your help, it's now far easier to get my files when I'm away from home.

Last time I tried using this with a Netgear box it failed miserably as the thing would only post updates to the DynDNS site when the address actually changed, which is often infrequently with broadband, and DynDNS expires the records if they're not touched for a month or so. Very useful Netgear!

Have they fixed this yet? Will the boxes post an update at regular intervals even if the address doesn't change?

I have been using DynDNS for five or six years now. Mainly with my Linux router and a script which updates every 30 days.

As to how well it works with Netgear routers - I have only just started using this feature in the last few months. One on a NTL connection which is always on, therefore the IP Address will change only once or twice a year. And also on a Bulldog ADSL connection with a fixed IP Address.

I don't know what happens with the updates from Netgear. It has been over a month since I setup that NTL connection and DYNDNS account and have had no emails from DYNDNS about lack of updates.

Anyway - even if it is only updated when the emails arrive, the system still works well. :) Especially as it is a free system I am definatly not complaining. :D

Hopefully it will continue to update but this is something I will monitor, my router is the Netgear RP614 with the latest firmware. I've only set it up for next week as I'm off to Cornwall to stay with family and wanted access to photos that I have stored on my Linkstation rather than me having to copy the ones I think I might need onto a CD.

Edit: I don't know what NTL have been doing in the Oxford area recently as I am only able to keep the same IP for about 2 weeks, it has been like this since the end of January.

After Vertigo1's comments I'll be watching the netgears I have setup. You'' be nagged by email if your not updating anyway.

As to NTL - you will often find you'll get the same IP Address from DHCP if you reconnect with 24 hours. As my router is always on and always connected, my IP Address rarely changes unless NTL do work on the network. DYNDNS still makes life easier though as words are easier than numbers to memorise. :)

I am now joining Vertigo1 and swearing at the Netgear router's inability to update itself at DYNDNS. Not quite sure what it is supposed to be doing actually?

I visited my customer for the first time since the 35 day timeout of DYNDNS.... and found that not only had DYNDNS not had any updates from the Netgear, but it also had not sent any emails out to warn me of this. Which is odd.

I had to login to the account by hand and setup the URL again.

Out of curiosity, I then power cycled the Netgear Router as I was hoping this would send out an update probe. Which it didn't.

So I am not really sure WHAT the DYNDNS section of the NetGear router is supposed to be doing. Maybe it only notifies of a change of IP Address. And it also assumes that you are paying your $9.95 for the account meaning that there is no 35 day timeout.
