My pwm temps are pretty high, so looking in to doing the bolt mod.

Which size bolts did you guys use?

Already had a look on there, the guy says to use #4-40 X 3/4" screws - but im sure if i went to a hardware store they wouldnt know what i was on about. I need to the size as in m3, 15mm etc.

I generally call anything that uses a screwdriver a screw & anything that uses a spanner/socket a bolt :D

I see where your coming from though :)
 
Swapping the plastic springloaded push pins for an nut and bolt see below

Mine was lacking in contact on most of the mosfets due to a push pin coming out of the hole on the mobo and poor contact on the last chipset also.

Out of curiosity what temp monitoring program will show me the PWM temp in xp x64? i have tried TAT and Core temp and no luck with those.
 
Its worth doing it on boards that use push pins, Reappling thermal paste with help greatly aswell. Just remember to keep the push pin as RMA'ing a board with bolts fitted with void the warranty.

I use screw as a anything with a tapered thread/shafts. (aka woodwork)
and bolt being a straight thread/shafts that used with a nut.

Wibble12345 your thread-length defernition has many common exceptions, as does using head type to differentate. As a rule, if a nut will fix its a bolt if not it's a screw ('machine screws' are therefore technically bolts in the same was as tomatos technically are fruit) so I guess were both right :D

- If buying in a hardware store use machine screw or bolt (they'll know more than you or I ever will)

- If buying in a DIY warehouse (B&Q etc) use nut & bolt (they'll know less than you or I ever will :p

To resurect this old thread, am gonna do the bolt mod when I have my pc apart for cable management and fitting my water cooling setup. Just so i'm completely clear in my head, I need the following parts:

M3 20mm machine screws
M3 nuts
M3 washers (to go under nuts)
M3 insulating washers for back of motherboard (was thinking of using red fibre washers??)
Thermal paste (got AS5)

Do I need to remove all the thermal pads that are fitted? I thought I read somewhere that the mosfets are different heights????? I can't find that info anymore, read so much stuff recently about this, water cooling and oc'ing my head is fried lol.
 
I'd buy longer than 20mm. That's less than an inch and could be very fiddly.

The only thermal pad is the one on the mosfets, and it's tripe tbh. I don't think they're a different height. But I wouldn't use AS5 on them unless you're very very careful. It's conductive and could cause problems if you get any on the board. MX-2 or Ceramique would be better. AS5 is grand for the north and south bridges tho.

The red fibre washers should be ok, tho I used the white plastic ones.
 
Thanks for your reply, will sort some Ceramique out for the mosfets, forgot AS5 wasn't non conductive. Do you think 30mm will be long enough? Don't want really long bolts sticking up from the board if I can.
