Ipad 2 now or wait for ipad 3?

Owned my iPad 2 for 6 months. Absolutely love it but if the iPad 3 does have a retina display then I'll definitely be getting one.

Retina display is not a good enough reason to buy an iPad 3, not for me anyway, the iPad 2's screen is fine just the way it is.

I saw Apple presentation where they showed off retina display, but in real world terms, it makes zero difference, if text is difficult to read, you just zoom in

Chances of it being retina are almost non-existent, I'm sure. at 10.1", the display would have a resolution of something like 2800x1868. That would make it one very expensive panel.

No, the current panels are great but they are a bit soft. A higher density would fix probably the only real criticism I have of the panels. It doesn't have to be a retina display though - 1600x1280 is about half way between retina and the current panels and that's about where I'd expect then to head next, if they do increase the resolution.

Thats your opinion. Its fine to see a presentation and pass it off with throwaway comments. But to say doubling the resolution of a screen makes zero difference is just laughable.

You obviously don't do much reading but thats mostly what I use my iPad for so for me having crystal clear text all the time without having to zoom in is a worthwhile upgrade.

Personally I would say either wait till the 3 is out to get the Latest model or to get a better price on a 2.

Rofl I couldn't give a toss about punctuation on an online forum. Good job for clearly taking it personally though, I guess you're one of those people who couldn't sit down and work it out for themselves so....Well done, I guess? By the way, you might want to keep your own posts in check before you try berating me for punctuation.

That's a terribly worded post anyway, but I'm sure you get the point.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

back on topic, apple defined retina as a pixel density which, when viewed from 12 inches, is supposedly equal to the the resolution power of the human eye. Now, whether that last bit is true or not is debatable, but what it does mean is that the iphone 4/4s display has a ppi of 336 (pixels per inch)

2048x1536 on a 10.1" display results in a ppi of about 254 ppi. This falls short of apples retina claims by about 25% in terms of ppi. Check here if you like : http://members.ping.de/~sven/dpi.html

As I have already said, it would have to be somewhere around 2800x1868 to be a retina display, unless apple suddenly decide to change the definition of retina. IMO, it is very unlike either of those things are going to happen.

You edited your post 4 times. Have you quite finished?

I clearly touched a nerve. Why is it trolls are always the most insecure? If your point was to prove how pathetic you are then yes, point made. :)

hmm.

* I made a perfectly valid post regarding retina.
* you ignored it.
* I made a further valid point that people thinking doubling the ipads resolution makes it a retina display is incorrect.
* Being wrong, you then pointed out my grammatical and punctual errors when clearly your posts are worse, all whilst again completely ignoring the points I made.

the post was edited 1) because I felt the need to point out the hilarious hypocrisy of your posts to me and 2) because i then felt I didn't make your mistakes quite clear enough.

Try to keep up and keep it on topic, uniQ. There's only one troll here and it isn't me.

One thing is certain though, if the iPad3 does come with a 'retina' display then it's going to cost significantly more than the current iPads.

Q - how much are those who are waiting for the iPad3 willing to pay for it?

Not sure, I guess I'm hoping it will be at the same price point but they may well release it at a premium with larger space and keep the iPad 2 model. If that is the case then I may rethink my plans of upgrading for another year.

well, the current iP2 screen, at least at release, was reported to cost about $210 according to iFixit's teardown - a significant percentage of the overall cost. I can't really see any increase in resolution coming without a bump in the price of the tablet but who knows how much a new panel will cost. I would expect a proper retina display at 10.1 inches to be at least $300, probably a lot more in reality as it surely would be the highest resolution display on any mass produced device ever released?

Also - if the screen resolution does get doubled then the CPU, GPU and RAM are going to have to receive a significant speed bump/increase in capacity, or it'll run like an old dog.

http://recombu.com/news/rumour-appl...march-to-be-in-shops-a-week-later_M16783.html

rumoured a6 processor, screen made by sharp (retina) and also improvements in the Wi-Fi chip,

Rumoured announcement first week of march.

Ars Technica has done the sums and notes that the ppi of a 9.7-inch 2048x1536 screen weighs in at 264; a big jump up from the 132 ppi of the iPad 2’s screen but still below the 300 ppi plus that Apple defines as being truly Retina.

:) I made the mistake of thinking they are 10.1" displays but it seems I came to the same conclusion as they did.

Retina has effectively just become a buzz word that the media has run off with, people rightly or wrongly just associate it with a high(er) resolution now. Doesn't seem worth getting obsessed about though.
