Ipad 3g?

Just a quick question about an Ipad with 3g. Can this be used totally without having a sim card inserted?

You won't be able to use any data/on line services.

Everything will work fine but you will only be able to use WiFi!

Yeah thats fine im not fussed about the 3G just one of my friends has one that they are selling. I didn't know if it could be just used as a normal wifi Ipad. Could i put my Iphone 4 sim in and send receive emails and surf the web?
