Hi all,

I'm looking to find a solution to a problem, I have ipads dotted around our different work sites for signing in etc which need to remain powered 24/7.

also they need to be connected via ethernet as wifi is not available/reliable enough.

Does anyone know of an adapter or peice of kit that can power the ipad whilst allowing its USB host or ethernet connection?

Cheers
James

Power over ethernet works for these devices.

There is a new project in testing at the moment in our office using ipads for meeting room door displays... only a single cable that provides both power and ethernet.

I'm told they are only using the standard apple ethernet adapter and that also charges... with a power over ethernet adapter sitting in the comms room, of course.

I think someone's stringing you along. There isn't a standard Apple Ethernet adaptor for iPads, it's the camera connector with a USB Ethernet adapter plugged into it. There are no PoE components inside the Apple USB Ethernet adapter.

Yeah I thought that, I have purchased some special usb host lightening cables with passthrough so this should theoretically be able to charge the ipad whilst allowing the usb ethernet adapter to function?

Could you not just run leaky feeder past the Wi-Fi antennas of the devices in your kiosks, hook it up to an Ubiquiti Bullet, lock the SSID down hide it and turn the Tx power right the way down, and call it a day? The ethernet option has never been officially supported and is likely to throw error messages up on the displays.

Lightning to USB cable may not provide enough power for the Ethernet adaptor. You might need to add a powered USB hub between them.

We installed about 80 of these in one of our larger offices. PoE > USB > iPad that was securely mounted in the wall. The iPads are connected to the network by wireless though - that all works fine.

I'll see if I can get any clarity on how they're doing it... it was only from a passing conversation so I may have remembered it incorrectly.

However, I am certain they are pulling both power and data through the one cable as wifi is not supported in the environment / usage scenario.

Hi,

I have not been able to find anything that will do this, did you have any joy?

Many Thanks
James
