Just had an odd problem with a colleagues Win XP laptop in the office. It's not connecting to the network so I did some snooping and it's not picked up any IP address.

Since I don't have admin access to the machine, I went and tried an ipconfig /renew and got a weird error saying it couldn't renew the IP address due to a file missing...it failed to mention which file ;)

Anyone got any ideas? Never seen this before :)

Could be a corrupted TCP/IP Stack if you can't connect it to any networks. There is a procedure to repair it, I download a tool that some guy made that automates the process but there is a series of commands that does it. You will need admin access to repair it though.

does the machine pick up a private automatic ip address? a 169.254.x.x?

If it does ip is working ok and the network card is ok.

if not try reinstalling *** card drivers and repairing winsock, google winsock fix and you can get a file that does everything for you.
