I'm 99% sure that with the O2 insurance you're not covered if you lose it, only if it's damaged or stolen. If it's damaged you have to return the handset and if it's stolen you have to register it with the police and get a crime number. If you get a crime number, have the phone blocked and then the poor sod it was sold too calls up O2 whoever sold it will get in some sort of trouble.

can anyone tell me when the phone is on EDGE, do O2 charge you to check emails (push) when you are not in 3G signal range?

No you are not charged, with the unlimited bolt on or iPhone contract you get unlimited data access via the O2 Edge and 3G Network.
