iPhone 3G is just.. slow

Hi there,
Was on my mums 3G the other day and it well was just slow, even compared to my old Samsung Jet, it lags in its response to input and it just seems very slow. Somewhat like a PC with a virus. She has also noticed it to, any thoughts on how we could resolve this?

What firmware is it running?

It's not jam packed full of software is it? Have you wiped & reloaded the firmware?

Well, i would say around 30-40 apps on it? Yes a backup and restore is on the list to do.

hmmm, surely apple tested this firmware thoroughly on the 3G before they released it? How have they allowed this to happen?
