iPhone 3G replacement?

Hello, now, I've got an 8GB 3G and like many people, ever since the iOS4 update my phone has become unbearably slow in everything I try to use it for. Typing a text out is absolutely torturous, using Safari is an absolute no go because it takes such a long time for the application to even open, Facebook took 3 minutes to simply open after I pressed on the app and if I'm flicking through songs horizontally and I then decide to hold the screen in the vertical orientation it takes around 2-3 minutes for the screen to orientate it's self the correct way.

These problems were absolutely non existent before the update and while I can appreciate that the option to downgrade back to iOS3 is available it is not an option I am willing to nor should be willing to take. I have done everything reasonable to make sure it is not my fault that the slowdowns are occurring. I have used the power button and home button method of resetting the phone, I've turned off and on numerous times and I've also tried backing up all of the phones data and then doing a restore of the phone within iTunes which did alleviate the problems for a few hours before the slowdown has returned.

My question is this; what would be the likely course of action by Apple if I was to book an appointment at my local Genius bar and take the phone in? If there is already a fix in the works for these issues then I apologise for creating the thread but I know I am not the only one with these problems.

Isn't it just due to the fact that the 3G's processor is a fair margin slower than the 3GS/4GS' and the iOS4 update is just that little bit more CPU intensive..?

That isn't my fault. I spent £350+ less than 4 months ago on a product that Apple has rendered virtually useless then?

i'd say yea book an appointment at your local apple store. but at a guess i'd say all they'll do is roll your os back to 3.1.whatever it was at.

my 3g is behaving the same as yours since the ios4 release, but thankfully i was out of contract a few months back and have been waiting on the iphone 4.

let me know how you get on at the apple store, be interested to see what they say. if i wasn't getting the iphone 4 shortly i'd definitely be kicking up a major fuss over this

While I can just roll back to iOS 3 I don't see why I should. Also, if you roll back virtually every app in the App Store will tell you that you need iOS 4 installed to download them, even if you don't. It's Apple's fault that my device is like this seeing as it worked perfectly for a number of months before. I'll leave it until next week and see if I get any replies from people who have already tried taking their borked 3G's back to Apple and if not then I'll have to reluctantly venture in myself. The nearest Apple store is around 30 miles away and parking is an absolutely nightmare, not to mention pricey.

If you're taking three minutes to open Facebook, something isn't right. My 3G is a little slower since the update, but nothing of that order of magnitude. Do you have notifications on? Try disabling them and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks, I'll try that today and see if it speeds up at all. It isn't a dramatisation, it really does take two to three minutes! Yesterday I was watching TV and I pressed on the Facebook app and it took the duration of the adverts for the app to fully load.

Sorry for bumping the thread but I now have another issue. TV shows bought through iTunes and then synced to my iPhone are just stuttering every two minutes. They'll go really slow and then suddenly speed up to catch up with it's self, after it's done that the picture will be out of sync with the audio. Not sure if this is related to my other problems since the update but I'm seriously not impressed.
