Tried to update to 2.2 this morning without new version of iTunes, and got an unable to update error. Turned my phone back on to find it in recovery mode (iTunes logo with USB cable on screen).

Whenever I plug it in, iTunes says that its in Recovery Mode and must be restored, so I click restore, only for it to go through the process and show an unable to restore (1002) error.

I've tried rebooting the phone, rebooting my MacBook, a different USB port and using DFU mode to no avail.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Downgrade iTunes to 7.7?

Use iBrickr (windows) or iNdependence (mac) to get the phone out of recovery mode by rebooting it.

Which option do I need to use i iNdependence?

How would I downgrade to 7.7? (and why 7.7 in particular)?

Cheers

iNdependence should pull it out automatically. Make sure the iPhone is plugged in then open it.

7.7 is the one before iTunes 8 and can iron problems out.

Put it in recovery mode and upload 2.2 using 7.7. Here's the firmware. Hold the alt key on Restore and select the 2.2 file.

When trying to select the update, the dialogue box opens it like a folder rather than allowing me to select it - i cant select anything inside either!

iNdependence didnt recognise the phone - kept saying waiting for iPhone.

Cheers for your help so far.

Is the file ended in .ipsw?

Save it to the desktop, while holding alt click restore, click desktop and select it? I don't understand why it should be a folder?

Got it to recognise the ipsw file, but it didnt work. Am I looking at a trip to the Genius bar?

Seem's that way. Sorry I couldn't help, I reckon it might be a 2.2, baseband problem. They will replace the phone no problem or tell you how to sort it or do it themselves.

How did you get the file you downloaded to act as ipsw as i downloaded and it as a zip and extracted as folder

A zip? Mine didn't download as a zip? If it's a zip then extract it!

There should be a file which ends in .ipsw. That's what you use.

it ok what i did is just deleted .zip at the end of the file and press enter and a message pop up asking if i want it saved as a .zip or ipsw and so i select ipsw and it works so now i am downgrading to 2.1 at this moment to see if i get get gps on that

Cheers for your help anyway mate, do I need to book in to Genius bar? My nearest one is Manchester (about 40 miles away) so I don't want to turn up to et turned away. I'm going tomorrow I think.

Think you right there as i just tried to do it and get an error.. Ah well putting 2.2 back on and if GPS not work after this then look like a trip is needed.... Do you get the blue dot on yours iSam for GPS???
