Iphone 3GS, all of a sudden won't turn on but displaying connect to itunes

Anyone know why this is? I let my phone battery die, then I went to charge, turned it on and its now has a symbol of a usb cable pointing to itunes, as if it wants me to connect it to itunes

Any reason for this? can't do anything with the phone
 
Let it charge for a while, then it'll turn on. My lass' one does this all the time as she never charges it till it's as dead as a dodo.
 
I have charged it, its not that symbol, I know the one your thinking of, but its not that, this one is asking me to connect it to itunes, the battery is fine.
 
Ah, ok. Misunderstood. Assume you've tried a hard-boot? Hold power & home button till it resets?

You could also dump it into DFU that would make it restore from iTunes?
 
Its saying its in recovery mode, and that I have to restore it, which means loosing everything on there?? is there anyway I can back this up??

Power button and home button held down don't work
 
Every time you sync the thing it should make a backup on your computer. You just restore it to factory settings then it will say do you want to load the back up. Sorry if I'm a little late with the answer.
