iPhone 4 activation

I'm looking to buy an iPhone 4 some time soon. I am aware that the current jailbreak doesn't work on firmware 4.0.2.

If I go and buy one now in town it'll most likely be 4.0.1, so my question is: when I activate the phone through iTunes does it force an update before you can use it?

You'll get prompted to download and install 4.0.2 update once your iPhone’s been activated. It's your decision when/if you update to it, I would think the phone you'll get will have 4.0 installed rather than 4.0.1 though.

Ok, cool. I'm assuming iTunes will ask if I want to download 4.0.2 rather than 4.0.1 (if the phone does have just 4.0). Are there ways to get 4.0.1 installed?

Yeah iTunes will only ask you if you want to download 4.0.2. Apple don't give you a choice of updates only the latest verison of iOS.

You may be manually download iOS 4.0.1 from the internet and manually update/restore to it though.
 
Hmm, only one I can find is "iPhone3,1_4.0.1_8A306_Restore.ipsw" - the filename suggests that it's for the 3G/3GS, but the site that I got the link from says it's for the iPhone 4. Can anyone confirm?

Yup, its absolutely fine to use, i messed up my phone resulting in only being able to use DFU mode. Itunes kept wanting to restore to the new firmware 4.0.2. So i just downloaded that exact .ipsw and its all good :)
 
Ay i hve the same question really as i was going to buy iphone 4 on PYG and use current contract in it with modding the sim, but I wanted to know a few things first.

Hopefully it has 4.0 update to 0.1 and keep a back up of this before jailbreaking?
Install UltraSn0w in Cydia to unlock since ima buy on vodafone and im on three (cheaper than apple direct and quicker delivery)
Then i use backup to revert it so it isnt jailbroken? and doe the unlock sim still there or does it sttill have to be jailbroken?
