iPhone 4 home button issues

Guys, anyone else having issues with the home button?

I have noticed lately that every so often (very random) the button just will not work at all, and I have to press the lock button before it will work again.

It normally happens when I have an app open and want to go back to the home screen, and can be anything from the in built text app to games and even web apps, but like I said, it happens randomly.

Is it likely this is a software or hardware glitch?

Sounds like a hardware glitch if it can do it at stage and then works again, then stops working again. Consider getting it repaired :) Or if it's insured, smash it up and get a new one!

Btw, you can unlock the phone (ie, turn the screen on) by pressing the standby button, not just the home button ;)

Just a little bit of an update to this, looks like it is indeed a hardware issue. There is a little play in the button (in that I can wiggle it around) whereas my friend's iphone 4 is rock solid.

The issue remains after a restore so I am booked in to the Genius Bar tomorrow. Will update this post after that.

Yep I'm starting to get this issue!
Would be interested to see what the Genius Bar says :) Keep us posted :)

Same here lol...tbh its not a major issue but would like to know the outcome of your situation diggsy.

Ah, good to see I am not the only one, although a quick search of Google would suggest it's a known issue too.

Oh, and as above, not a huge problem, but still a little annoying none the less.

Will update you guys tomorrow following my Genius Bar appointment :)

I will be checking any replacement offered as I had 3 (yes three) dodgy 3G ones handed to me when it needed replaced. The guy in the store was extremely embarassed, but just kept bringing out other phones until I got one that was perfect!

Update time....

After some discussion at the store, including them suggesting that I restore the phone as a new phone (told them that would make little to no difference, as the button was clearly playing up) they eventually offered me a replacement.

This was following the Genius getting her own phone to compare, and the home button her phone was solid, with no play at all.

So, replacement offered, and it was even more loose than my own....grrr, not happy :(

So, she had run out of time, and I was told another Genius would help. 5 minutes later another guy appears, in a real rush it would appear. Swapped the replacement out for another replacement, he checked it quickly, as did I and it appeared not too bad, although the button was still not as sound as I would like, but I didn't have much time to look at it such was his haste.

He pretty much told me that he couldn't swap any more out, so I had no option but to accept that and take the one he gave me. He was in a rush and I needed to get going soon too, so not in a position to put up much of an argument.

Now that I have had time to try it out, the button on it is around the same as my original phone, loose but not really bad, however it has an even bigger issue - the button sits a little bit proud of the screen, so that you catch your skin on it every time you run your finger near it!

It does however seem to be working correctly, but I am currently restoring all of my apps etc, so will see what happens once they're back on.

Needless to say, I am absolutely fuming! Am awaiting a call from one of the managers, so watch this space...

Great, not only is the button on this a little raised, but comparing it to a friend's, the screen is a little discoloured (yellow/orange tinge to it) and the battery life is terrible - full charge overnight, nothing running in background and it was 78% at 5pm with 20mins usage, which was 2 text messages and that was about it.

Not happy at all, so this is definately going to be returned

Happened to me when mine got wet, after weeks of punching the crap out the phone i updated the firmware and it started working again. Was all fine until I left my job Friday and went to return the phone after a full wipe and reset and noticed it was continuous restarting lol.

Yeah, did a restore last night and at least the battery seems to have gone back to normal now, not sure what the issue was.

Will bear with it for a week or so and see if the screen livens up any as I know some of them were a little yellow to begin with until the glue fully cured.

We'll see, but I fear it will still be going back...
