Ok so I've had enough of having my iphone. I've had one for 4 years and whilst it's been good and it does work well it's limited an irritating for what I'd like to get out of it. My contract is not due for renewal until August and although that is some time away, I want to see what alternatives there are out there.

Everything that the Galaxy S2 for exmaple, does ticks all my boxes in terms of functionality, and freedom from itunes. I'm fed up of not being able to use my phone as a more mobile computing solution. I like being able to drag and drop files and access the memory card on the phone. Swap the battery. Use bluetooth the way it's supposed to be used. I stuck with the iphone for so long as it was the perfect solution in terms of smart phones at the time (I didn't want a windows phone), now I feel android is more applicable to me.

I don't want this to turn into a apple vs other argument. I'm after alternatives to the iphone 4, in terms of speed and useability. I've used the S2 as an example. :)
 
Well the S3 is coming out soon, surely for the same price contract of the Iphone 4 you could get the S3.

Im not sure of the release date though.
 
GS2 all the way, can't fault it :)

Although You could wait a couple more days/weeks and see what the GS3 has too offer.

Guess it depends how much you want to spend?

No just researching for the moment. :) Will tie this in with a new contract.

Will the S3 be out in time of my upgrade? (It seems it will be). I've used an S2 and enjoyed it - was tempted by the Note though - but I guess it's less practical as a phone as it's rather big. I'm not a big caller, but a browser an texter.

I'm on a contract at the moment, but I'm also going to hunt around, as I've got way too many minutes, and too little data, and am paying over the odds (just over £28). I've seen deals out there for around £18-£22 for the sort of call plan I'm after.

Obviously some contracts cover the cost of the phone, others don't and of course PAYG doesn't. However, I'd sell the iphone 4 and hopefully get a few hundred pounds for it to cover costs of the new phone if the contract doesn't cover it. :)
 
Well, you definitely want an Android phone, no question about that.

It's hard to say at the moment what your best option will be in August, but I'm almost certain that it will be between the HTC One X and the Samsung Galaxy S 3 as mentioned.

The S3 should have been released by then and the One X will have been reviewed by almost everywhere, so you'll be able to get detailed information about all aspects of the device, as well as demo them both in a shop.

It's quite likely that the S3 will simply be a better device, more power, better camera, better battery - and so on. However, you may prefer the design/look/screen of the HTC and the camera should be perfectly fine.

There are currently no official specifications on the S3, so people won't be able to tell you what specs it has.

You'll have plenty of choice though. I can promise you that.
 
The Note is probably the best spec phone out now and would suit you if you are 10% calls, 90% browsing. It seems like it'd suit you, so you may want to try it out in a shop! - the only thing it doesn't have is Ice Cream Sandwich (due soon though).

As for what the Galaxy S III may entail, put it this way: the Galaxy S II came out in April last year and it's still one of the best phones out on the market. So, the S III will literally be a beast and definitely worth waiting for the announcement, at least.

I'll go and play with the Note at some point - will there be a "new" Note coming out in line with the S3? Practically the S3 may be more sensible, but as you correctly surmised I text more, and use my phone more as a tool rather than to make calls (ironic isn't it?) as now with telephony and comms available online it seems less necessary to use a mobile.

In my personal opinion it's unlikely, but possible.

If you don't make many calls then the Note is great, but if you like to text while walking (one handed) it can be a bit awkward.
 
Yeah I get what you're saying. Well it's a few months away anyway, so I shall hold fire.

Then comes the battle of finding a decent network and decent deal!
 
The S3 is touted to have a 25% bigger screen that the S2?
Jesus they're still phones right? They'll be the size of ipads soon.
I'm due for renewal and am hovering over the iPhone 4s purely for manageable size. (currently got HTC Desire).
