Hi there, a few weeks ago I seemed to resolve my constant disconnections from the Wi-Fi by setting and static IP address and filling in the network detail manually on the iPhone Wi-fi settings page, now the problem I'm having is after a few hours the router just kicks my iPhone off the network, the Wi-Fi symbol is still showing on the iPhone but the Wi-Fi is not working. Now then I have a funny feeling this is something to do with the DHCP server on the router.. I have it set up like, if all of this is correct then does anyone have any ideas as what might be causing the issue?

If you've set your static IP address too low on the iPhones settings, it could be clashing with IPs the DHCP server is dictating to devices that use DHCP.

For instance, my router is; 192.168.2.1. I then leave 192.168.2.2 - 192.168.2.49 free for any devices that will use DHCP in the house. Now I don't think I'll ever have 40 odd wireless devices in the house, but it makes sure that it leaves a huge chunk of the space available for any wireless devices to be given DHCP.

Then my static IPs go from 192.168.2.50 up to 192.168.2.255. My Windows box is 50. My iMac is 100. My server is 200.

Cheers, set it to a much higher number. I'll test it and post back :)

I was part of your original thread. I think you should start looking at new hardware, because to get this many issues means you have a deeper problem.

Or, if you can, try a friends router on your network perhaps. Just to help you decide the best course of action yourself.

Hmm. Problem is I don't thinking i'm going to be able to get a new router..
Any thoughts on the Dns Address's that I mentioned above?

Primary and secondary DNS entries are provided by your ISP automatically by their own DHCP service, don't worry about them on your router unless you're running your own DNS server(s) yourself, or you have a specific need to use a specific DNS server (which is unlikely for the average user)

No I'm not. Sounds like you have run out of ideas. :p
Many thanks for your help. Do you think the lease time on the DHCP server makes a difference? I have it set to infinite.

well it behaves like this whether the IP address is static or dynamic, so its not that.

1) does your iphone 4 do this on wifi elsewhere (coffee shop, friends house etc..)

2) do you have any more wireless devices in your house besides the iphone 4. Are they effected ?

1) Haven't been on anyone else's Wi-Fi network long enough to test this.
2) I'll grab my mum's 3G tomorrow and try and test this. :)
Everything else in the house has been connected via Ethernet.

Do some more testing to work out where the fault lies.

As already hinted at above, i think this is more than just a configuration issue.

When the iPhone stops working, are other devices ok at that moment?

Try going to your routers security page and changing from wpa2 to wpa or even wep as a test. It may be the encryption causing problems. As others have mentioned it could just be your router isn't happy with the iPhone.

Try updating your routers firmware I there's a newer version out. I had a dlink router which didn't like my ps3. There was a newer firmware where this was fixed so you never know.

I'd first see if a new firmware is available. Then look at lowering the security or even turning it off to test. Don't leave it off though!

There is no newer firmware available unfortunately, I'll try that security option shortly. :) What difference will it make security wise?
Is this a Netgear router?
No.

Most likely, however as I can't get a new router I must try and fix this thing.

Well what router is it then? Have you googled to see if it's a common problem with that router and iPhone/4.
Stop using static, go back to auto. Change wifi pass. Tell iPhone to forget network. Switch to airplane mode. Shutdown iPhone. Switch it all on and start again. Also restart router. Had similar wifi problem with old 3Gs and a netgear. Since having a BT HomeHub2 I've not had a single problem, and wifi speeds are much faster. Can download at 20meg on my current iPhone 4 too!

Bah it's just done it again.
Router is a WRTR_159G_v01. I'm going to have a google now. EDIT: Bah, google shows nothing. :(
