After a new phone, don't generally know a lot about phones, i was thinking of going for the iphone 4 but a little birdy told me that they may all be recalled later in the year / a new version coming out to fix it's problems, any strength in this story?

I heard this through a guy who was in an apple store at the weekend and apparently he wasn't meant to be told this and he wasn't meant to tell anyone.....but you know how it goes :D

Are the current problems with it big enough to warrent not getting one yet? What would you recommend as an alternative?

Apple won't recall it. If you saw how arrogant their press conference was 'admitting' the antenna issue you'd know the chances of a recall are about the same as them making a cheap computer for the masses.

They won't recall it. They'll simply bring out an updated model which fixes the problems and call it iPhone 5

As an alternative? You'd be looking at Android, probably the HTC Desire but there may be other, better devices just around the corner.

If you don't know much about phones, then get an LG, HTC or Samsung, just as good.

It's funny, my cousin said exactly the same thing, but he couldn't give me an indepth reason as to why?

I've used a few iphones and had an ipod touch for a while so the interface and layout seemed nice which is why i was thinking of an iphone, with that in mind would you still recommend going with an LG or HTC?

Definately, i wouldn't have said LG though, their Android handsets are somewhat budget orientated. As it stands HTC just can't be beaten, even by Apple.

No. If you are already use to those, get an iPhone.

Yes. If you want something different, just as good, if not better.

50/50 :p

I'm due an upgrade tommorrow and I'm in a similiar situation to you. I have an iPod touch (I have 2 actually a 1st gen and a 3rd gen) and I really like the simplicity of the interface and the apps I have on there.

I also have a T-mobile G1 with an android 2.2 ROM on it so I know first hand that android is a better mobile OS then iOS4 (for me and that is just MY opinion...before the rabid apple fanboys come and tear me to bits about how I'm somehow wrong), its also so much cheaper then the iPhone...

The only reason I may get an iPhone 4 is for the app store. It is just better then the android store atm, but give it a few more months and I think android may just catch up...

There is always the option of a 3GS for the price they are still good handsets...

But if you want bang up to the minute tech then the Desire is a cracking capable phone and you won't be disappointed.

I have had the Desire and the Galaxy S and have the IPhone 4 my personal opinion i prefer the Iphone 4 and will be keeping it, they go on about the retina display which i thought what crap all the time but i have to admit its the best screen i have used i know galaxy s has the lovely Super AMOLED but the sharpness of the I4 screen makes it the better screen for me no matter how small writing is it is perfectly viewable.

Then touch focus when recording 720p is great no more blurry videos but in the end its down to personal choice i have had 4 android phones all together Hero, Milestone, Desire, Galaxy S but i always find something i don't like about them or always something not running right and have to keep using new roms to sort it out its happened on all android phones i have had.

Apple dont' recall, remember the 1st Gen iPod Nano where the screen was really prone to scratches, they later supplied a case, which is actually what they are doing now the iPhone 4 'free case'...

Go into a shop and try them yourself...

iPhone 4, Desire, Galaxy S, X10 (although that's still on 1.6).

I generally avoid phone shops like the plague because the annoying salesmen and women are always constantly trying to make you spend more money than you went in to spend

Luckily though i just phoned 3 about when i could upgrade my phone, which i thought was this month, turns out it's next month, previously i've been paying £16 a month for a 300 minutes 500 texts very low plan with no internet usage, they've now put me on a deal which is £7 a month, i get 500 minutes unlimited texts and 2GB internet usage :D bargain

On this contract im tempted to buy an iphone outright and just whack my sim in it then stick with paying £7 a month!

I'm in a similar position as my contract is up (Currently got a HTC touch HD), I'm hopefully going to get the Desire via work and the iPhone for personal use. I'm on a great contract at the moment with orange so I'm probably going to keep the sim and buy the iPhone from apple.

I'll have to pay a fee with orange to get a micro sim but I guess it's worth it.

I have to admit the iphone app market is great, the games are stupidly addictive (been playing on the Mrs iPod Touch all weekend lol). A few guys in the office have the iPhone 4 here and the build quality is impressive!

If you like the interface of the iphone, go with that. You'll spend ages trying to look for phones which apparently compete or are even better in terms of specs but in my opinion you'll not find anything with the same ease of use and the smoothness of the interface. With the exception being the HTC desire, although that's been a while so I'd expect a newer UK model designed to beat the iphone 4.
