Just noticed I've used 800 MB again this month 2-22 Oct and tested the phone around my house last night and noticed when watching youtube/downloading podcasts and updating apps if the phone drops the wifi it doesn't seem to reconnect and carries on downloading via 3G which is obviously chewing through data....

I'm trying here to find a way for the phone to message me when it loses the wifi connection so I can cancel the updates.

My internet connection is weak in some parts of the house and I presume it's dropping the signal and then carrying on in 3G since the signal is stronger.

However I can't continue using all my dataplan on downloading stuff at home :(

Any suggestions or tip for this. Would be great if on dropping wifi it paused the download to wait for my ok to continue on 3G!

If you go to Settings -> iTunes & App Stores

At the bottom there is a "Use Mobile Data" setting.

Turning this off will only download apps, music and books when connected to Wifi.

As for only stream videos over Wifi, I'm not sure... Unless there is a specific youtube app with a specific Wifi-only option, I think you'll be a bit stuck (Unless you're jailbroken?).

Just checked and it's off !!!

How the hell could i have used 800MB in 20 days ? ???

Even presuming I lose connection now and again :(

Suppose the "longwinded" workaround which I've been trying to remember to do is go to

Settings -> General -> Cellular -> and turn cellular data off each evening when I get home from work :(

it'll still download podcasts. I listen daily and some can be 100mb or even downloading audio books as well i just click download and walk away.

Ah darnit :(

If you were jailbroken I'm sure you'd be able to automate it somehow... But if not, I can't think of any other way other than just placing your iPhone down near your Wifi connection while it downloads... Or move to a phone plan that allows unlimited data :p

or to simply go to unlimited data and care not lol

lol cheapest one here is around 40 euro and i'm paying 15 for 1gb and unlimited texts

Ah I just saw you live in the land of Chocolate :p

I'm currently on a Three Sim-Only plan - £12/Month; 5000 texts, 200 minutes, Unlimited data

U jelly brah? :p

Bit off-topic, but if you are happy with Three, worth hopping on their £6.90 deal and getting the £3 AYCE add-on. No point spending extra for the freedom if you aren't going to move :) Worth giving sales a call as well (0800 number on their website) and enquiring about offering you a bit of a discount. They offered me the £15.90 deal for £12.90 with £15 credit, making that £9.90 for five months. Going to call them back and take them up on that! Added onto the fact I get 4Mbit/s average in the area that they say has bad signal, and around an average of 12Mbit/s in medium to strong areas, AND tethering is enabled if I'm desperate and need to be a bit cheeky and use it, there is literally nothing on this network to hate!

Back on topic, why not grab some Wi-Fi repeaters, or some cheap access points with some Ethernet-over-Power adaptors?
